I'm having a very interesting problem. I have a Intel P4 2.8GHz, 512RAM, PNY Vertigo Geforce4 Ti4400 card, Soyo Dragon Lite MB with SiS 360 AGP. When I run 3dMark2003 or Neverwinter Nights, on WinXP Home the benchmark or NWN freeze. I've got the latest drivers for video card, AGP, did all of the updates for XP. If I run 3dMark 2...it will freeze on the test called Nature. Its not a overheating issue, and only freezes on those tests and in NWN...so I'm wondering what could possibly be causing this problem??

Have you tried running memtest to make sure it's not a memory problem?

There is a program called memtest (or maybe memtest86). I am sure you can find it with google. It's basically either a bootable floppy or crdom image. The idea is to let it run for a couple of hours and see if it shows any errors.

Have you tried updating the bios on your motherboard?

I have had a problem with my gf4 ti4800se on a gigabyte ga-sq800 ultra
and the latest update seems to have fixed the problem.
Try updating your mobo bios

I did all the above, my memory is fine, upgraded the bios...and determined that it is possibly bad memory on the video card. I bought a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and NWN runs great...except the benchmark still freezes.

I've seen stuff like that happen with weak AGP slot voltage... but it was universal on anything that accessed its "higher functions" like OpenGL or DirectX really... not 2D Windows GUI stuff.

* I don't know if that's any help, but a sure way to diagnose it is to mess around with another one like it & if problem goes away it's the video for sure... if not, there are alot of BIOS settings that can affect how things go as well like 2x-4x-8x AGP rates & such as well as the Hex Addresses used to route that stuff also., as well as memory speed clocking in BIOS, wait states, & even CPU overclock settings etc.

(Do look into all of that as well!)

Of course, there's always the possibility (as in the test you consistently freeze up on) that the software has a bogus instruction in it too...

Programmers, even the ones @ MS, make mistakes or don't catch errors you might due to diff.'s in setup of software/OS/Hardware or even their 'use patterns' of the PC! Even John Carmack & IDSoftware has had to issue patches for situations they overlooked... part of the game really! Update city! Thank goodness for users that report it directly... no wonder MS & the Mozilla folks have implemented their error report remote features: GREAT idea!

Keeps folks working too, & working to make us better & better stuff the more of it they tackle... heck, Mozilla/Phoenix folks issue NIGHTLY rebuilds & patches... that's excellent & awesome!

What amazes me? Is that ALL of this stuff works together as well as it does... the combination of hardware (machine) & its software (ghost in the machine)... & as on as many platforms as it does. A credit to human ingenuity & the flexibility of it? Astounding... limit of human creativity.

* I know, alot of hypothetical b.s., but that's what we do here... consider the options & possibilities... like doctors getting a list of symptoms, we yield potential prognosis/diagnosis, sometimes right sometimes wrong... but it gets you to examine alot of the possibilities alot of possible ways!

APK

P.S.=> Good luck, hope it works out for you... worst comes to worst? You may learn something, you may have to end up exchanging a part or two... I've bought a couple "lemons" in my time, that happens as well! apk

Your "KILLING MACHINE", that duallie Xeon setup only snagged out a 1500? Something's gotta be up w/ that...

(If that is by design, lol, they've 'future proofed' that test for sure I'd wager... my system'd probably score a 700 on it!)

* Doesn't sound right, what have others scored?

APK

P.S.=> Reason I ask is I don't really believe in that test with all the b.s. of vendors attempting cheats in their drivers on it etc. + it's so HUGE to download & all that... apk

the nature scene is PURE GPU pocessing - so could be low AGP voltage / bad card.

also g4 cards are not Dx9 compliant - or do not support it, could be why 2003 freezes, although it runs fine for my ti4600.

FutureMark have released patches to 3DMark 03, and I'm sure I saw mention of problems with the nature test - I think the latest version is 330?
