I've looked through topics, and noticed that several other people had the same question way back. I however, had trouble in figuring out how to fix it for myself. When I try to run Need for Speed, it shows up an error message :

You have DirectX 0. Please install DirectX 7. Could not load ".\drivers\registryz" [FILE=\real\patch3\pc\set3d.c, LINE=273]

I can't find where to install DirectX 7, and I DID install the latest one the DirectX9 lately, however it STILL says that I have DirectX0 and need DirectX7 any help would be appreciated. It used to work all the time, I don't understand why it stopped, thanks in advance to anyone that trys to help.

Hmm... if you have DirectX9 then there should
be absolutely no problem, as far as I know, but still
I guess you must download/install directx7.

I had similar problems, although with different games,
and it appears that each's compatible with certain
DirectX versions, so "The newer, the better" doesn't
work here.

Can't seem to find any other cause of this problem...

Are you trying to run the original NFS, and if not, which version of NFS are you trying to run? If it is NFS(the original), what OS are you running, '98 or some other flavour?

The original NFS is a DOS game and has nothing to do with DX. If it's asking for DX7 it was probably produce around the 1999-2000 time frame....probably NFS3-4?

I can rip DX7 off one of my old CD's, I still have a few of those puppies kicking around. But, if Sweetascandy is trying to play the original NFS in XP, it's a lost cause, she/he needs dosbox, and then it's not worth it, the graphics suck anyhow.

First, I wanna say thank you for everyones replys.

Anywho, yeah. I'm running the original one, and I'm running it on my XP, it used to work, like 5 months ago, and then right now, I don't know, I got the urge to play it again, so I put it in, and that message came up. I looked EVERYWHERE for DirectX7, no sites had it to download, then I finally saw Directx7.a I downloaded it, it still said that I had DirectX0 and need Directx7, so then I went and downloaded DIrectX9, and the same message pops up. It still says I only have DirectX0, and I just don't understand why.

Cause DX9 is a pig to get rid of. If you run any newer games, and dump DX9, some of them won't play at all. If that's not a prob, scoop this: http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html

After running the uninstaller, install DX7.

Lol, but where DO you install DirectX7, I spent like an hour searching on google, and did not find anything. It all said you need 98 to install it, I believe and/or, you should get the newer version ; Directx9

anyways, thank you. I'll go uninstall it right now.

(the un-installer did NOT work) :\

DX7 can be downloaded here: http://pacosdrivers.com/dx.asp. I've dwnlded DX7a and scanned it, no viruses, so that's not a worry.

As for dxbuster not working, try this one: http://www.majorgeeks.com/DirectX_Happy_Uninstall_d4347.html, if that doesn't work, there's a few others available on the "Driver Tools" page, keep trying until one works.

I know one of them works, I used it to uninstall DX9 myself, but I can't remember which one, heh heh heh

Good luck.

You cannot uninstall DirectX, not without having to reinstall Windows again afterwards.
Windows 2000 comes with DirectX 7.
Windows XP comes with DirectX 8.1
Windows 98 comes with DirectX 5 (6 for 98SE)
Windows Me comes with DirectX 6

You can install DirectX 9 and still have backward compatibility with older versions of DX 5 to 8.

I suggest reinstalling Windows again, then install DirectX 9.0c.
For DOS games, DX is irrelevant as DX only affects windows games.

Dude, you CAN uninstall DX9, whomever told you different is full of she-ite. I have done so myself.

Please, do not advise people to reinstall Windows when it is not necessary. With all due respect, when you say DX9 cannot be uninstalled, you are wrong.

I do believe that DX Happy Uninstall works the best, but never give up, one of them will work. http://majorgeeks.com/downloads28.html

Why anyone would want to unisnstall DX9 nowadays is beyond me, I can get DX9 to work in DOSbox, so there is no need to uninstall it.
