The installation program from Mustek does not correctly register the drivers dependencies. This leads to an error message ("Scanner not ready").
To correct this:
1. Install the Mustek 2.0 driver for NT 4
2. Open Regedt32
3. Goto HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesAB306P
4. Look at the parameters DependOnGroup and DependOnService. DependOnGroup should be empty and DependOnService should contain "Parport" and nothing else.
5. After changing these values reboot
6. Now the device driver is started and your scanner works...
