Hi there, Im sorry to bring this old chestnut back up from the bowels of Middle Earth, but no matter how many threads I read on limitless forums, no one elses problem is quite like mine...

My current setup (read signiture + GA7DXR mobo, minus the 2940 SCSI card) works fine, no crashes or lockups, the only problem I have is that my god damned DVD Rom insists on running in PIO mode. So I wanted to enable my motherboards onboard Promise RAID controller to run the CDROMs on IDE channels of their own, and also reconnect my LiteOn 40x CDRW back up. There is a jumper on my motherboard to set whether the Promise controller is RAID or standard ATA133, so I set it to ATA133.

When I enable the Promise controller, as either raid or ATA133, I get the NV4_DISP infinite loop blue screens in WinXP Pro. This happens at seemingly random times. I have checked for conflicts in device manager and everything is OK.
I have installed the newest detonator drivers and it still happens.
My GFX card is an Elsa Gladiac, should I look on their site for drivers?
The devices attached to the RAID controller work fine, no corruption or slowness, its just these damn BSOD's...

Any light that anyone can shed on to my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Just so we have some reference point, what NVIDIA driver version are you using? and the drivers for the promise card?

You can always try downloading the latest from http://www.nvidia.com and http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Driver/Driver_GA-7DXR.htm

Anyways, maybe we can help a little more once we know what driver versions you are using =).

Any highpoint/promise/adaptec controller generally do not support ATAPI devices, so it's recommended to connect them to motherboard IDE connector, and instead connect HD to promise. And why do you want your dvd to run in PIO?

And also a BIOS update is highly recommended before you try anything else.

I am using version 41.09 det's, but it has been doing this with various versions of the drivers.

I have tried connecting the hard disks to the Promise controller and it did the same, although I think a little less frequently, except that when I shut down or rebooted the computer the hard disk made a funny noise, like the heads were hitting the side oh the HD!!

Ill try updating the Promise dribvers and see if that makes a difference, but I have the latest BIOS, first thing I tried. Ive been looking around the BIOS and there are no setting to enable DMA or PIO, and the bootup screen (the one after the screen that sez 'press del to enter setup') finds the DVD as DMA 0.

Sorry if this all sounds a little confusing, I dont want my DVD to run in PIO mode..

Incidentaly I have just removed the two IDE controllers from Hardware manager and rebooted and now the drives are running in DMA 2 (sony dru500a) and DMA3 (DVDROM). But I understand this is only a temporary solution as other users have tried this only to have the settings go back to PIO a few days later.

Also I see new Detonator drivers are out, Ill get them too.

OK, I have updated the detonator drivers to the latest versions, 43.45, and I had to force XP to take the drivers for the Promise controller, I had to click Install from a specific location -> Dont search, I will choose the driver to install. Upon enabling the Promise controler via a jumper on my mobo, WinXP blue screened right after the screen with the progress bar in it, the DOS one. But I fixed that and then everything seemed OK.

But, alas, after using windows for a while, it would lock up at random intervals, but no BSOD this time, my monitor would switch off and then back on, and then the PC would lock up, requiring a reset. This happened three times, and on the third I got the nv4_disp BSOD.

So I have disabled the Promise controller and everything is OK, Except for the PIO Mode DVD ROM drive.

Anyone got any other ideas I could try?

So will all this happen if you remove the scsi card?
also try install all amd chipset drivers.

You can also try to update fireware for the dvd and cd writer as well.

I have had the SCSI card removed all the time. I believe that recently it has started causing heat problems with the GeForce, cos they are in slots next to eachother and the GeForce has a big heatsink and fan on it.

I have looked all over Gigabytes website for chipset drivers and all it sez is that XP instals the latest ones, and that you cant download them, and I dont have the CD that came with the board..

I will have a look for Firmware for the dvd rom, but as its a rebadged LiteOn (OEM) I doubt I will have any luck, the firmware I have is hacked so its RCE free.

Have ou set the IDE channel as "DMA is available" In device manager?

Yep, I checked that the option was set to use DMA if available.
I may try and revert to an old firmware, I can use DVD Region Free for region 1 DVD's..
I will try and put older firmware back on the drive (although I dont hold my breath) and tell you what happens..

Well, on a "side-note":

Cyberguy, I've found that the NVidia 43.45 Detonators driver builds are very nice, good performance, & even fix things (like iirc, Jerry Atrik running dual displays now on them as well where he could not before... I think it was he with that hassle on earlier builds & it would not work).

I use them, & have yet to have had an NV_Disp4.DLL lockup or bluescreen, if that's any help & reason/impetus for you to try these out!

I am sorry to say I have given up, I tried installing new drivers and got the nv4_disp error, so I disabled the Promise controller and went back to using the dvd rom drive in PIO.
To perhaps help me overcome the problem I have decided to buy a GA-8INXP motherboard and p4 2.4ghz CPU. This motherboard has a different RAID controller chip on it, its still a Promise but a different model, so I hope it will work a little better...

If it's any consolation to any out ther that have gotten that error nv4_display error.
I know it gets tiresome and boreing to hear people always saying to update your drivers, but I think when people say that they forget to mention that you need to update your motherboard too(if it can be).
I couldn't run Battlefield 1942 and updated all my drivers till I contacted EA and they told me of the "loop error".
I ended up running a mem_86 test for like 11 hrs with no errors and all passes and didn't think it was my video card cause games like Half Life and UT and JK2 and Quake3 arena ran fine.
So, I searched for bios updates for my mothernoard and lo and behold bf 1942 ran right after the bios upgrade.
so, check out to see if you need a bios upgrade for you motherboard and that should solve the problem..

I have already been down the drivers route. I updated the BIOS first off, and I looked on the Gigabyte website for MotherBoard drivers and all I could find was a message saying that the latest drivers were automatically installed by WindowsXP, so that was a dead end.
Someone posted me a link for the drivers for the Promise RAID controller, so I got the latest ones, and I have the latest Detonator drivers for the GeForce2.
I am starting to lean towards the draphics card being faulty now. Recently I reinstalled windows XP. When it finished installing and came to setting up the users and things, it locked up, I rebooted and it went straight to windows telling me that the GeForce had caused a SERIOUS error.
Tomorrow I am getting a new motherboard (Gigabyte 8INXP) and 2.4Ghz P4 CPU...

I will enable the RAID controller on this board (its a Promise controller, but different chip) and see what happens..

I got my new motherboard and CPU today. Installed them into my machine and everything is hunky-dory.
I have enabled the Promise 20276 controller and have it running my three CDROM drives, and has been for hours with no problems.
Let this be the end of my experiance with the nv4_disp error.

I too am having a problem with nv4_disp and WXPPSP1.
Specs are:
Intel P4 2.8GHz CPU
Epox 4PDA2+ Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Memory
Benq DVD/CD combo (IDE 1 Slave)
Denq 52x CD-ROM (IDE 1 Master)
Dimaond Data DVD Burner (IDE 2 Master)
Promise 150 SATA TX2 Controller
2 x 36GB WD 10KRPM HDD
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (128.0 Mb): 1280 x 768 - High Color (16 bit)
Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet

Seems whenever the system sits a period of time it'll trigger the system and it goes into a BSOD.

What I've done so far:
updated the BIOS
updated the video drivers
updated the NIC driver

Still BSOD with same error NV4_DISP

Anyone has any idea what is causing this. I see I can't ask Nvidia about their website don't really accept question regarding their GC.

Are those nvidea drivers signed or not?
Have the latest drivers is no guarantee of bug free use?
If they are unsigned then remove them and use latest SIGNED drivers.

Where would I get the latest "SIGNED" ones from if not NVidia?
