Problems with Nvidia GeForce MX4000

I am not a computer pro here, but I know a fair amount and would love any help I can get. Here is the problem: I have installed my Nvidia GeForce MX4000 (PCI slot) and in the manual it says Turn off computer, put in the card, plug monitor into card, turn computer on.

I am not a computer pro here, but I know a fair amount and would love any help I can get. Here is the problem: I have installed my Nvidia GeForce MX4000 (PCI slot) and in the manual it says "Turn off computer, put in the card, plug monitor into card, turn computer on." I do that and the monitor doesnt show anything.
When I plug the monitor back into the original CRT plug on the back of my computer, it shows up. But if I plug another monitor into the video card CRT plug, then that one shows a picture of my desktop. I can use Nvidia options and move my taskbar and things back and forth, and I can drag windows across monitors and things like that, but I want only one monitor to be running off the video card. When I try to run games, ex: City of Heroes, EverQuest, or even Rise of Nation's; I get fatal errors and the program closes.
I originally had onboard Intel Extreme Graphics controller, but I disabled and uninstalled everything like I was told to by the very limited Tech Support I had from eVGA.com.
One other thing, when I open "display properties" or "Nview Options" it shows up only as having one monitor connected. Not the two monitors giving me the option to set one as primary or whatever.
Please give me help of any kind, if you have any questions to help answer my problem, email me at insaneclown120@hotmail.com or leave me a message on here.
Please reply as soon as you can, I want my games back!
Oh, by the way, I am running Windows XP on an eMachines, 2.8 ghz, 512 ram PC.

You might go through the procedures that you used in how you uninstalled your onboard video and then you you installed your new video card. What it seems like is that your onboard video has "reinstalled" itself and overridden your new PCI card.
Generally, you have to delete any software associated with the onboard video and then go to the system manager to delete the hardware device for that video card. Do not let Windows reinstall a "new device found". (By the way, if you have installed the Nvidia drivers uninstall them also) You must reboot but before Windows comes up, press whatever button (Sometimes DEL or ESC or F4) to get into the BIOS to disable the onboard video. Save the configuration. It will then want to reboot again, just switch it off. Put in your new card, attach it to the monitor. Turn the machine on. If the onboard video is disabled, the PCI card should be detected by the BIOS. You will know because you will be able to see the normal writing on the screen as the computer boots. If this is the case, Windows should come up in 800x600 mode and claim that it has found a new device and want to install it. Don't let it. Hit Cancel and insert the CD that came with your card and install the video from the CD.

Several problems why you can't get a second VGA to work:

-not configured in BIOS
-not supported by OS
-must disable onboard VGA first
-PCI VGA's must be installed to nearest slot to CPU
-figure it out yourself, maybe the card is ****'d up, or you need a new motherboard.

AMD ATHLON XP 2100+
GFORCE 4 MX 4000
ASUS A7N8X-X NForce2 Chipset

Everytime I turn my computer on the monitor do not receives any signal from video card. Anytimes, a simple turn off and a turn on process is sufficient to initialize the computer, but many times I need to try more than two times. In few cases I don't have success.

Has anyone this problem and a solution?

bprounds & jackal8, I would suggest you go to the nVidia website and download the latest drivers - click here.
rlsantana, you may have a dodgy graphics card or monitor cable - does the monitor work with the onboard graphics?

Download the Latest NViDia Drivers.
Update Direct X to Direct X 9c.
If you want you can switch to XP, most graphic card problems disappear in XP.
Check your game's requirements esp. graphic cards.

Check if you computer is still under thge waranty. if it is, have your card checked, specialy motherboard.

i've had the same problems with MX cards.

Don't listen to the store when they say you have to upgrade your MX to FX, i've had that experience here (Gilmore, Philippines), *@#$% those stupid techs, who never bother to ask your computer-knowhow-level before opening their mouth and spreading thier ignorant gospel, . Games will perform ok on both cards the only question is quality, 64 or 128 MX is cool, 64 or 128 FX is awesome, that's what im trying to say about quality.

I have the GForce 4 MX. This is what I don't understand, I check my dxdiag info and it says I have directx 9 installed, I look at the back of my FARCRY box and it says you need directx 9 to play it, and it works fine on my pc. However, when I try to run MOH PACIFIC ASSAULT, I also get that message telling me I need a card that can handle at least directx 8 or something. EA say in their troubleshooting guide that the game does not support gforce 4 MX.

So what is really going on here? Does the Gforce 4 MX support directx 9c or not, if not then why can I play other games that require dx9? If it does support dx9 then why are EA saying it doesn't? Why should a game run on a gforce 3 and not a 4 MX when the MX4 surely must be a later model? And why don't nvidia provide any real technical support?!

I have XP and the latest nvidia drivers and my card is working fine.

I have some sad news for everyone here who has bought a GF 4 MX series card. They are basically a glorified GeForce 2 Ultra chip, which, as most of you should know, is several years old, and can only support up to DirectX 8. Also, Never listen to computer "techs" in big box stores, often, they are just teens hired on for a while who think they "know everything there is to know about computers". In my experience, there is always something new, something unexpected.
Now, onto all your problems. I can sum it all up in a few steps.
1.Add/Remove Programs -> Find your OnBoard Video drivers (usually some sort of Intel Chipset (eg I815 Intel Extreme Graphics) or an S3 chipset) and remove them.

2. Restart, enter your BIOS (hit delete (or F1 depending on your BIOS make) at the POST screen, the first bootup screen you see.

3. Look through all the tabs, until you find one that should read something like "OnBoard Device Controllers", it's different in every BIOS, and locate the "OnBoard Video/Graphics Controller" and set it to "Disabled". (keep in mind that you should not have installed your new card at this point.)

4.Save & Exit the BIOS, and turn off your computer, then insert your new card, plug your monitor into it, and make sure the card is snug and well seated into the slot. USE MINIMAL FORCE, it should just slide right in.

5. Now, power the PC up, let it boot into windows, don't let it automatically install, just insert your drivers CD that you got with the card, install the standard drivers, and voila, it should work. If it doesn't, take it back to the store where you got it, and smack the salesman in the face with the card . (Note, don't actually do that, hitting salesman is not polite. )

Any other problems occur, I'll be watching this forum for another week or so before I head off for summer training.
Good luck people.

I'm having a different problem with this card, though I am not sure if it is the card - though it is my prime suspect. When playing video files (.avi), it freezes the computer now and then. It takes about the last fourth of a second of the Audio, repeats it over and over, everything else freezes. The odd thing is, it will sometime go on and on for hours without freezing .. but then, when I restart the computer it usually will freeze again within a minute if I try to play a video file again - makes me think it might be a heat problem. Any ideas?

I'm running Windows XP, the mentioned graphics card and a Athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB of RAM. In a big tower with plenty of cooling, so there shouldn't really be issues with heat.

Hi Group,

I have recently brought a NVDIA GFORCE 4000 MX series graphics card , I have installed it in the AGP slot and after starting any game it haults after a few seconds. Even though I changed the graphics to be on-board after the card failed to run games smoothly, I get the same problem in the on-board card also. I am really confused about the problem. I have tried everything starting from loading the driver from the cd to disabling the on-board graphics in the BIOS. Can anyone please help me out.

Thanks in Advance.

Hey Guys, I had a problem with my Counter-Strike Source doing the same thing... Saying it cant load the video settings... Its a problem with the new Nvidia Drivers Cause Nvidia is too lazy to fix their stuff before they put new drivers out. You can Either Keep the new drivers and download this program nHancer (its a program made by Nvidia so you can fix their driver fuck ups and install driver settings for certain games from old drivers that worked). www.nHancer.com and just follow the download instructions. Just install it and Go to Start>nHancer>Profiles> and then "Import Standard 71.84 Profiles" and deselect all of them and just import the profile for the game your having problems with. I did this for my Half-Life 2 and it runs fine now because it didnt used to... Hope this helps.
