Saitek R4 Force Wheel (3)

This product has been tested on the following operating systems: Windows 2000 and has a average rating of 3

The last rating (1) has been submitted on 2008-06-05 01:05:31 by Anonymous running Windows 2000:
Received the follow messages:
1) saitek support told me that drivers will be out, but not directly when...
2) According to Saitek there are no plans to provide a driver for the R4 Force Feedback Wheel for Windows 2000 since it's a discontinued product.
3) After reading that the R4 wasn't supported and that Saitek wasn't planning support, I was a little upset so I e-mailed them myself to ask what the deal was. Here is there response. It doesn't help me or other R4 owners but at least I'm not mad at Saitek now. Sorry, but there will not be any drivers for the R4 Force Feedback wheel for use with Windows 2000. The situation in this case is as follows: The Wheel was discontinued far before Windows 2000 was released. During Win2K developemnt, Microsoft was very clear to developers that Win 2K would not support multimedia and gaming. Microsoft offered no support for gaming on this platform. This position was changed by Microsoft in April 2000. We are now creating Win 2000 drivers for all our USB based products. Windows 2000 has very limited support for game port-based products. As you will notice, virtually all force feedback wheels now use USB port. Most importantly, the wheel was built under a Microsoft force feedback license. The license was terminated due to alleged patent infringement by Microsoft of an Immersion patent. Microsoft and Immersion have resolved this, but there is no more access to necessary code required to fix it for Win 2K.

The device will be recognized & display properly IF you apply the beta-nt patch for the saitek sge software. Only hitch is, the saicnfig.exe will not recognize the game program being launched. More specifically, it will not launch the game profile. I did a clean install & not an upgrade. The upgrade process, may have different results, but i doubt it as this seems to deal with something in the registry and using the emulation for win95/98/me does not work (emulation prg is part of winxp).
www.saitek.com
