First post on this board! I've seen one very similar to mine, but not quite the same:

I have a SP0802N hard drive which I have been running as a secondary hard drive under XP Pro with no problems since earlier this year. When I install SP2 it no longer appears. It is in Device Manager, but within Disk Management it shows as Offline. I cannot reactivate it - in System Event Viewer I get the messages "Internal Error - The disk group contains no valid configuration copies (C10000B6)" and "Disk group ComputerDg0: Errors in some configuration copies: Disk Harddisk1, copy 1: Block 256: Invalid magic number in the configuration copy". I could probably convert it to a Basic Disk but would then lose all my data (30 odd Gb worth!). It's a Dynamic Disk on NTFS.
If I do a System Restore to the point before installing SP2 it appears again!

What can I do to get it back please?!!!!

Ive only seen this error when disks die! Not normally 'death by SP2' mind
I guess there are two easy options:

1- stay on SP1
2- rollback to SP1, move the data to the working disk, change back to a basic disk then load the data back on. Go back to SP2 and prey it works!

I am assuming that this disk is a simple volume? If so I suppose you may as well just have it as a basic disk. Of course if it is mirrored, striped etc then thats a whole different story!

Thanks for your reply.

It is a basic disk. I was thinking if all else fails then I would try what you suggested and format it and start from scratch. I jsut think it very strange that something that will work in about 10 minutes time if I roll back to SP1 won't work now!!!!

Very true- and I am sure there is an explanation for it somewhere.

I've just spent a whole day getting a MS Access database to work properly (its an awful thing to 'develop' in) and rest assured things just break for no apparent reason all of the time!

Lets face it- it could be so much worse judging by the other SP2 posts that have reared thier ugly heads.

If i get some free time soon I'll have a further dig around and see if we can formulate a solution.

Even if you solve your problem in the meantime I am sure we will all end up just that little bit cleverer by the end of it!

Thanks! For now, I've rolled back to SP1 (System Restore is a wonderful thing!)

Presumably, seeing as I have disabled Messenger, use Firefox with all Pop-Ups blocked, and have F-Secure Anti Virus and Firewall, there isn't that much more (if anything) I would get from SP2 anyway is there?

Nope!

I am not sure if the person who reported it ever came back (many folks dont once they get their answers, & usually? I assume when that happens they got their answer & success, as "no news is good news" etc.)

I guess why I mention that is, alot of folks responded with some pretty GOOD ideas - one of which (LOL, not mine in THAT one, I was dead-up OFF/WRONG lol in it) might have fixed their hassle!

Wish I knew exactly which post it was... lol, I should have bookmarked it, because I WAS WRONG! Just for my own sake so I can laff @ myself!

* Could be wrong about that, & I don't recall exactly WHEN & WHERE that post happened here, but do recall it as you did mentioning you saw one like yours as well!

qprfact, I would say format & see what that disk does after that... what else is there?

Maybe NTFS FileSystem rights somehow got hosed? BUT, if you cannot SEE THE DRIVE in Explorer in the first place??

How can/could you reset the NTFS filesystem rights, period???

ScinTex said it too, I just scanned this thread & I agree with him:

REFORMAT (while under XP SP #2 & see what happens... hope you don't lose data you had on there though that you needed from it!)

APK

P.S.=> If you have to get data off of it? Temporarily backup data as best you can off the C: (main) disk to say, Cd-Rw, reinstall XP w/out SP's on it & get the data off 2nd disk & start again. OR, you could take this 2nd disk to a pal's home who has XP w/out SP #2 on it & get your datasaved that way too alternately (this is if you have to get any data off the 2nd disk)... apk
