I tried the Free one from AVG, & it is pretty good stuff (as well as being up to date)!

* It seems to do the job!

(Anyone else give this one a shot? If so, what do you think??)

APK

P.S.=> Occasionally, I like to try other programs... Big Norton AntiVirus "fan" (actually, long time user unwilling to experiment) over time since the early 90's... but this AVG one's alright! apk

Right now I'm running NAV, but, I've run AVG in the past, and, it wasn't bad at all. Actually I've recomended it to a number of people who couldn't or wouldn't afford to keep up with NAV's subscriptions. Also, I understand that AVG is quite highly regarded in Europe.

you might also like to try AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/
That's pretty good too

and

avast! http://www.avast.com/
I thought that, from a security point of view, avast! was very good, but very invasive. Kind of like a schoolmaster rapping your knuckles, if you step out of line.

Heh... funny analogy on avast!

I have not tried it yet... or antivir, but am WELL aware of both of them!

(I will, no doubt, give them a shot & test them out as I had tested out various disk defraggers over time in the likes of:

1.) Diskeeper 1.01 thru 1.09 on NT3.5x & Diskeeper 2.0 thru 5.0 on NT 4.0

2.) Norton Speedisk (loved this best on Windows 2000 where it used its OWN API & regularly beat all other defraggers in job done & time taken to do it in a contest analysis done in NT Magazine, now .NET magazine)

3.) Mijenix JetDefrag

4.) Raxco PerfectDisk

5.) (Edit part, thanks for reminding me jim) O & O Defrag (best interface of them all I felt)

All fine programs, the best being Diskeeper & PerfectDisk on XP, but I am back on my old std. Diskeeper on XP now! Habit & I like its interface & boottime defrag routines better... small thing to judge a fav on here, those two are close!)

I took a look at AVG, AntiVir, & also Avast recently and approached each company with an idea of pooling our resources with a good filemanager (like Windows Commander possibly) with some work I did into an applications suite in fact...

AVG responded quite positively as I believe did Avast, but AntiVir I did not get an answer back from.

I still intend to pursue this eventually, once I check out & test each program... why?

Norton SystemWorks 2003 & Ontrack Fix-It Tools 4.0 need another suite out there to compete with them is why, lol...

Only way to find out which ones are good, is to hands on TRY them out!

APK

P.S.=> Why not? I've been to the commercial realm before & some of my work is there now... I think that when I really perfect up "APK System Tools for Windows ® ²°°² ++", which will be soon I think, it will be time to find a GOOD AntiVirus program to ally with & hopefully a DECENT filemanager & maybe defragger too! apk

i had a friend install this cause she got a virus, she kept it up to date and running and 3 days ago got another virus.

SO not to trusting of it right now, i used it about a year ago and liked it, considering it was free.

Well, it never hurts to have more than one of these types of programs online (not resident, they often "fight" one another in RAM both trying to grab various files as they load to examine them simultaneously), to do manual scanning with them!

(The damn virus' keep coming faster & faster nearly everyday!)

I just tried AVAST, Gladiator, & AntiVir as well and all seem like decent quality products for this type of work as well... never hurts to be "too safe" in my book, especially with the insane proliferation of virus out there nowadays!

APK

P.S.=> All of those in addition to AVG & Ontrack FixIt Tools antivirus program are online here... all decent stuff! apk

I used to use AVG at my old job, since the company wasn't licensed to install NAV on customer computers... But some minor complaints are that it doesn't easily identify which file(s) are infected or by which virus, unless you dig thru the log... This may have been fixed, as the version that I used was probably about a year old.

Found out a pretty cool thing:

AVG's resident email scanner works WITH the one from AVAST... both at the same time & nice part is they do NOT fight with one another!

(I'll take that any day of the week... it's unusual to see, but good to see as well)

APK

P.S.=> Edit part -> STILL running fine, two of them running in conjunction... pleasant surprise! apk

I simply love AVG. I have had Norton (big resoure hog), but AVG does a great job. I wouldn't switch even if Nortons was free. I've also used McAfee. Still no comparison.

It is a good program, no questions about it... Avast is pretty good also, along with AntiVir.

They all have automatic updates that download from the program itself, they're FREE & work very well!

(I keep those 3 online, with Norton AntiVirus 2002 again (this is the one I leave as the resident scanner though for files up off disks etc.)).

Neat part?

I have them ALL working scanning my emails... & no fights either. This is great because I think that's where the greatest danger is now for the common user: Right out of your emails.

(I get at least 4-5 a day that are infected, which is pretty astounding because you'd think your ISP would filter some of them off... they don't do as great of a job as they should I feel & I am on one of the BIGGER ones in RoadRunner as well!)

I also have Ontrack Fix-It Tools 4.0 in place, & it also has a nice antivirus program that supplements the others I use.

I do a scan once a week & just set them to running & go do other things I have to do (like on Saturday a.m., go do laundry or housekeeping & let them run).

Never hurts, & I am glad I tested the others out: They are as good as Norton AntiVirus &/or other commercial offerings, no questions asked!
