There is a thread going on at NTComp's sister site that asks the question "What is more secure, Linux or Windows?". It appears that I am the only one there offering options for Windows and why it can be very secure. If there are people here that are interested, check it out:

Please post there if you have anything to contribute (and please, no trolling ).

Both can be exploited, especially initially out of the box for the typically used models of both!

Not hardened versions (of which there is for both from FoundStone for NT-based Os' servers like that, or Secure Linux variants).

Anyhow, on "Windows is more unsecure":

There's NO doubt there is more Win32-based targets to exploit in Cyberspace, & thus... it gets more "fan-fare" & "f.u.d." spread about it (Windows).

Can Windows be as secure as Linux? Sure, outta the box on both they are not totally solid imo...

I would put up the setup I have here now on dialup & what I used in the past on CableModems vs. anything the Linux camp can put out in the way of a hardware + OS & software/IP & NetBIOS/LanMan Driver level mix (especially if tuned/tweaked for security on these latter 2 & fully up-to-date patched) up against ANYTHING out there in fact security-wise!

* They both are advanced systems that copy the hell out of one another's features as well (more from the Linux camp, because it's newer but copied a HELL of alot from UNIX, imo, becoming more "Windows-Like" daily... Just like Dos -> Windows -> became System7 (& now MacOS X) and, I remember how the DOS world put down gui macs too, same as how the Linux folks say stuff about Win32 NT-based Os'... stuff like "Linux/UNIX is multiuser", so what did Micro$oft do? BUY TECHNOLOGY, excellent one, from Citrix MetaFrame/WinFrame & port it into Windows via Terminal Server services... the "StRaNgE PoWeR" of BIG money = MS! When they spot a mature product they can buy out (another e.g.-> FrontPage or Visio, past licensing of Symantec/Norton &/or ExecSoft technologies as well regarding antivirus & diskdefrag technologies)) & feel could make them stronger? They do... the latest being GIANT company AntiSpyware!)

Anyways, on this, in my opinion?

I feel/think both have room to grow (and will, due to new technologies in the future we haven't even SEEN yet as well as patching for holes in that as it matures).

BUT, no question/no doubt that both are better now than when I recall using them a decade++ (& then some) ago (when I first got into this Personal Computer madness-n-lunacy)...

* Don't you all agree?

APK

P.S.=> VMWare type apps, security apps, & making these OS PERFECTLY inter-operate would be a goal for future computer scientists I imagine @ a binaries level... & I mean 110% perfect, where you can emulate it all (filesystems, vdm levels for apps running each other's on each w/out emulator, perfectly & another MS-buyout? Connectix VirtualPC, right, is a step in this direction... NTFS 110% w/ Linux too. Delphi/Kylix is a great step for binaries & code compatibility from the same codebase is also) & that, would be cool!

Clutch, I posted here because I lost my cookie for that site & did not have time today to do a send me password etc. via email, so here was my thoughts... apk

Ok man, later on today (now) I just posted pretty much what is here over there.

APK

P.S.=> It's TOUGH to convince a "zealot" of anything @ times, & I think you might be hitting that wall over there. One thing from reading it though I was glad to see? That Linux distros are starting to improve on ACL use in them... better than simple filesystem security it had before in R/W protections only... but, that's coming outta UNIX & NT-based Os' worlds now, isn't it? apk
