Hello,

I recently re-installed windows, not a fresh, but a "repair".

So, now my computer is rebooting right after the first splash screen when windows first boots up. I see the splash screen for a quick flicker, then computer promptly reboots. Can not even get into safe mode.

To eliminate hardware problems I slapped another Hard Drive in there, installed Win XP just fine, boots properly, all is fine, changed power supply too. This computer is just a plain old 1800 xp - nothing special, just a computer to web surf. I have not changed any hardware.

I have tried booting the xp disk and "repairing" (not the repair console) the current xp pro installation a couple more times and that does not help. I also have tried doing a chkdsk in the actual repair console, and no errors are found. It is a WD hard drive, and went through thier tools and found no errors.

Could there be a possible corrupt file when re-installing/repairing that the automated installer is missing? I do know the recovery console and have replaced files, but I have no clue where to start - in this case does it even sound like a corrupt driver or .dll ?

thanks.

It sounds like you are getting a Blue Screen error that is causing the computer to immediately reboot as soon as it processes a system device. Since you can't get into Safe Mode you will need to disable the automatic system restart so the blue screen stays on the screen long enough for you to read the message and post if back here.

Start your computer and start pressing F8 as soon as you pres the power button - just like you are going into Safe Mode. But instead of selecting Safe Mode from the menu, select "Disable Automatic Restart". Your computer will continue to attempt to boot into normal mode.

Except this time, you should see a blue screen with an error message formatted like 0x000002d or something to that effect. Please follow the procedure above and then post the blue screen error message here.

Does your hard drive happen to be SATA (Serial ATA) instead of the standard 80-pin IDE drive?

hey there,
they are the IDE variety.

-ive tried alot of messing around and ended up having to reformat and start fresh.

but, before I did that I did get all the info i needed by using the new install on the other drive and making a "backup" of the old drive that was not booting up (I couldent get into her dang folder because of permissions: acess denied). Now, after the backup was done, I just restored all that info (about 8 gigs worth) into a new folder on the new drive, and voila, all the access limitations were gone. It took maybe about 2 hrs for the whole process.

Glad to see you have it working! Before you use the old drive again, make sure you run a chkdsk /r on it to make sure it doesn't have any bad sectors.
