Hi I am getting frustrated with XP,

I have been using xp for ages now and just cannot get past the problem I keep getting...

Unlike windows 2000 it was very easy for networking and didnt have the problems I am having in windows xp..

well the main problem is not having proper access to the other computer.
I can see the other computer i type \\systemname in explorer and it goes there!! then I goto (C) then I am happy I can copy thing from c:

But for some reason I have problems accessing all files eg: if I try and goto the c:\documents and settings\username!! if I try and goto a username that is logged in on that computer it says u dont have access blah blah see administrator... da da da

I have checked and see that the drive c has full privlages for everyone.

Are they in the same workgroup? If so, use an admin-level account and try \\computername\c$ and see what that does for you.

"Are they in the same workgroup? If so, use an admin-level account and try \\computername\c$ and see what that does for you."

Clutch has strong point there...

Also be sure:

1.) Client for Microsoft Networks is in place as a network client (same spot as your TcpIP but in clients instead of protocols)

2.) Is File and Print Sharing in place also there?

3.) Be sure that TcpOverNetbios is on... and WINS driver is not disabled in Device Manager (you can show it in the menus SHOW HIDDEN DRIVERS view).

4.) PLUS, the NetBIOS over TCP helper service is on also!

5.) Are your shares created on both boxes on folders also?

6.) Are users from BOTH systems in place in one another's user groups on BOTH machines?

VALID UNC Lan usernames in usergroups on both boxes?

See, Administrator from machine #1 is NOT same as Administrator from machine #2... the system sees them in the form Clutch illustrated above:

\\machine1\Administrator (you'd add him on machine 2)

&

\\machine2\Administrator (you'd add him on machine 1)

(ID'd via UNC naming conventions... may be same name of Administrator but totally diff. entities and GUIDS assinged to each for security purposes as well as differentiation from where they come from on your LAN.)

7.) PLUS, have you been able to ping box to box?

(Sorry for busting in Clutch, you take the ball from here... I figure you are one stepping at a time with him & were gonna mention that anyhow but are at work & busy because of your terse reply!)

You take it from here, just had to add in my 2 cents worth!

hi, thanks for getting back to me so quickly...

arhh it is on the same workgroup (@home)

I have my system which is logged in as administrator and the computer name is amd2x2000, the other machine is modchan and logged in as mod which has Administrator group attached to the user account...

I looked in the settings and file and print it there,

Be sure that TcpOverNetbios is on... and WINS driver is not disabled in Device Manager dunno what they are and the WINS thing is not in my device manager...

4.) PLUS, the NetBIOS over TCP helper service is on also!

5.) Are your shares created on both boxes on folders also?

6.) Are users from BOTH systems in place in one another's user groups on BOTH machines?
dunno the last 3...

and most important what is this? VALID UNC Lan usernames in usergroups on both boxes how do I configure that?

hey can I ask someone who is smart and networking to possible if using win Messenger to find me and talk to me 1 on 1 for a little while...
search me, toxsickcity@yahoo.com
is my user account name in messenger!

and again thanks for your help so far...

First off no problem...

Secondly I sent you the APK Graphical Net Msg program (Works on NT/2k/XP as well as WinPopup does on 9x).

Thirdly, to do this? You go to Start Button-> Run Command -> usrmgr.msc (actual mmc.exe Microsoft Management Console snap-in for usermanagement).

You would add users as I told you in the letter in email/privmsg, it has the ability in its contents to FIND users to add iirc & if not, you have to pay strict attention above to my example #6... on the groups folder in the right hand side pane add new user will have find once you use the popups ADD button! Will let you browse workgroups names for users.

(It may only be in User Rights assigments that the FIND function works though, still waking up here & did not check... no biggie because you can enter them manually in the form of #6 example above by format of \\machinename\username from one machine to another for security and tracking purposes... no way around this, part of NT based Os design!)

E.G.=> Each machine on your LAN is its own "machine name entity" and thus GUID (globally unique identifier) with its own security scope... when you add users from machine to machine, you MUST differentiate where they are coming from!

Say you have one machine X and another machine Y, a 2 machine - 2 node LAN at home...

Your Administrator user on both is NOT the same guy (on peer to peer or even Domain/AD network)... even if same name. Before their name they are id'd by what machine they come from & reside on.

So, when you add say, a user to machine X from machine Y? You'd add him thus as in example #6 above:

\\machineY\Administrator

(and vice-a-versa on Machine Y from machine X)

Think of it this way: YOu are you & I am me... both of us have a user on our faces called NOSE... but, your nose is NOT my nose! Get it? Mundane & oversimplified example but point is there!

There SHOULD be a "checknames" function in usrmgr.msc & a FIND button function too that will validate your usernames you add, but Workstation and SERVER services have to be on iirc as well.

That's a point I missed above... AND, the hidden device is not WINS above, my mistake (operating from RAM memory here & no coffee this a.m. but it is usually on & is by default at installation if you installed NetBIOS Lanman networking) so disregard that unless you want to see if it is on in hidden Non-Pnp drivers in Computer management tool from Control Panel Administrative tools by choosing its View-> Show Hidden Devices menu option which will show Hidden Non-Pnp drivers.

Go at it...

APK

P.S.=> Make sure your Server & Workstation services are on as well, they too like Client for MS networks & File and Print sharing affect Lanmanager networking! apk

What version of Operating System is this?

(Home, Pro, Server, or Advanced server etc.??)

*

APK

P.S.=> APKNT4NetMsg.exe runs for you? Can you send messages machine to machine?? It will tell us ALOT about your LAN if it runs or not as well... if you can, do this: Open a DOS Window, type Ipconfig /all and put the printout here for us to look at it... tells us worlds about your LAN setup...do it for BOTH boxes & copy & paste it here from both systems... thanks! We'll get you thru this... it may be something stupid as services off or just bad nic or cable too... you must look over both sides hardware and software in this madness & lunacy... the machine AND the ghost in the machine! apk

Hmmm glad you pointed that out to me... that's an OLD batch I have to change hardcoded paths in it to %WinDir% or %SystemRoot% instead of C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT in...

(I thought I did all of them that way already, glad you pointed that out, time to re-edit it and repack that zipfile with that alteration in it!)

Thanks! I just looked and I did in the first part of it that copies the file to the %Windir% or %SystemRoot% but I did not for the .OCX registrations!

(Again, gracias so I owe you one now & have to dig you outta this EDIT PART HERE).

Windows XP... yes, but is it HOME XP, or XP Pro, or server model of somekind... I need to know!

APK

P.S.=> Could you send messages machine to machine using it? If so, means your networks largely in place & nics working... and your problem IS user from machine to machine related most likely with them not in valid usernames in valid usergroups machine to machine like example #6 above... easily fixed once you understand how it work, do read that example & follow it step by step... if questions, keep asking... you'll be astounded how simple it is once you grasp it! apk

OK... this is leading me to believe for sure your cables & NICS are straight up... and that on one system networking's right!

In services, first things first... did you do ANY tuning or tweaking of them on either box? If so, make sure services running are ALL the same on both rigs & matching... most importantly for you are these:

TcpIP NetBIOS helper
Server
Workstation
Messenger
DNS Client
DHCP Client
Remote Procedure Call RPC
Computer Browser
Internet Connection Sharing
Net Logon
NT LM Security Support Provider
Remote Access AutoConnection Manager
Remote Access Connection Mgr
TcpIP NetBIOS Helper Service
Network Connections
Security Accounts Mgr

* Possibly these, but only as last straw approach!

Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
RunAs Service
System Event Notification
Alerter

SET THEM AS AUTOMATIC & START THEM, reboot both rigs if you have to if they are off!

(I am still pretty sure its user level in usernames added to machines groups on machines from machine to machine... from the example #6 above! We have to check this stuff first though, one step at a time!)

APK

P.S.=> IN CONTROL PANEL, go to System Icon on both machines (both are XP right?)... give me their system names, we will do SPECIFIC example to add usersnames into groups on both machines with those names step by step! EDIT PART: We are "post overlapping" & I just caught your msg for IPConfig readouts... ok here is how you add users from one system to next (use your Administrator user for starters ok?):

Using Computer Management tool from Control Panel, Adminstrative Tools folder, Local Users and Groups tree item in left-hand side pane go to the Users folder & right mouseclick on it & use NEW User:

ON MACHINE named MODCHAN, add this Adminstrator user as new user:

\\amd2x2000\Administrator

ON MACHINE named amd2x2000, add this Adminstrator user as new user:

\\MODCHAN\Administrator

THEN, add those users same way (same name you added as new users) to valid GROUPS in group folder below users folder! PUT each in Administrators group!

On the groups folder in the right hand side pane add new user will have find once you use the popups ADD button! Will let you browse workgroups names for users once you right click in the righthand side pane where users are listed.

apk

Ok read this thread, has some points clutch and I gathered for mixed node 9x/ME -> NT/2k/XP networking!

(A REAL PAIN! I'd seriously recommend going ALL NT based consistent OS' on all your workstations/nodes on your LAN but may not be an option for you and good learning experience anyways!)

See this thread:

* Get back to me, I must go and collect my pay and discharge some responsibilities in the real world outside of "The Matrix" here, lol... like bill payments!

P.S.=> Stick it out, we have you working a good 90% of the way now, do check that thread out... keep looking at the points above we already went thru & improved your situation with already using... we can DO this! apk

In my Windows XP system I am having a problem, I have problem adding a user named "\\modchan\administrator" it says you cannot add "\"

and that is the biggest problem... I need a way to add my other computer to my locations or something???

perhaps if I was to goto Computer management and connect to another computer and edit the account like that?? but I cannot access the user accounts area when I connect to the computer management on the other computer

after restarting the other computer for a while I am having that problem where as if I try and access a resource on my amd2x2000 from modchan then it crashes unless I right click the folder or drive I wanna goto and goto properties first!

Bloddy Microsoft...

Off topic! I am having a problem with a game...
Red Alert 2, will not load,

I used to have a P4 1.8ghz, the game worked fine, then I upgraded to my new system details:

Amd Dual MP 2000+
1024MB DDR 266Mhz
4x 80Gig 7,200
Radeon 9700 Pro
21" Sony

after this upgrade red alert 2 would load up at all...

Then along comes Service Pack 1 for Windows XP
The GAme Red Alert 2 works now Yay, but Yuri's revenge doesn't!!

anyone here got an answer? or is this just a microsoft problem and have to wait longer for a patch or something?

"In my Windows XP system I am having a problem, I have problem adding a user named "\\modchan\administrator" it says you cannot add "\""

Don't bother with the USERS part (my bad telling you to do that)

JUST go straight to groups!

Then, once there in its right-hand side pane, simply use its tools to browse your workgroup as I show how to do above by rightclicking where those names are listed in that right hand side pane and adding a new user(S)!

Add each user as needed & you will see the \\machinename\username format in the list as it adds them by their TRUE Network UNC naming method!

"and that is the biggest problem... I need a way to add my other computer to my locations or something???"

Not a problem blow off the users part... just do the groups browse of your LAN and add the users from the other boxes!

(You will assign those users rights later by group they are in if necessary!)

"
perhaps if I was to goto Computer management and connect to another computer and edit the account like that?? but I cannot access the user accounts area when I connect to the computer management on the other computer"

Again, blow that off until you can add the users to each machine from the other machine nodes on your LAN into valid user groups!

"
after restarting the other computer for a while I am having that problem where as if I try and access a resource on my amd2x2000 from modchan then it crashes unless I right click the folder or drive I wanna goto and goto properties first!"

This I gotta think out... which crashes? ModChan, or AMD2x2000??

This is another problem that may be something for the makers of the game to deal with... part of why I loaded 2k with SP #3 on it to check some softwares I built for it on this new Sp to see if all my stuff works... and it does still perfectly as before!

hi, I dont know if this is what I am supposed to do? u can tell me where i went wrong...

this time I have captured pics now i have to know how to put em in...

okey i tried to add a user in the group thingy...,
but again i am not allowed the photos show me the steps I took tring to make the \\modchan\administrator happen...

I will write a message after each picture...

In this picture I have just opened my Computer Management, and have gone to groups.

In this Picture I have just open the administratot group. and about to click add

this photo shows the input user section..., this is the same interface for inputting a new user or a new group...

I have typed in the text \\modchan\Administrator, but the system doesn't like that!!! and i dont know why...

I have gotten this error message.. and at the top it says use this format computer\user
So I tried typing just modchan\administrator, still doesnt like it...

When I click locations I get this...
I cannot add a location... and I am stuck here...

from one of the earlier pics, there was a button called advanced... this is whats inside that...

Don't forget I am using windows XP Pro not windows 2000
I think windows 2000 allows \\modchan\administartor but xp not??[/img]

This I gotta think out... which crashes? ModChan, or AMD2x2000??
when I am trying to access amd2x2000 from modchan the modchan system will crash, but if I goto the amd2x2000 system and click log off the other computer will respond again, but I must not leave it too long...

eg: If I want to really access Amd2x2000 from modchan I must, on modchan type \\amd2x2000 enter
then double click (c)

if nothing happens after 3-5 seconds I will quickly goto my amd2x2000 and click log off... then the modhcan system will work.

This is a weird problem...

there is another way to access the computer that is to before entering the (c) if I right click it then goto properties, click ok then double click (c) and it will work...,

Now just another little bit of information better late then never..., but this entire problem I have been happening has been happening everytime I install a freash windows on my system...

Believe it or not, I am a computer technician but this problem is beyond me!!! haha bloody computers one day your best friend and next not!

Ok, it can SEE the location of the machine, & that's a good thing, means that the machine is in same workgroup & subnet afaik... but it not listing users IS a problem!

Humor me/Indulge me, & on the AMD2x2000 rig, drop ANY firewalls you have running on it & see if that changes the ability of ModChan and AMD2x2000 being able to haul in user lists...

Ok... ONLY other thing I can think of is what Clutch listed in the "Collected Fixes for NT/2k/XP/9x/ME mixed nodes networking in the URL from above & using the LMHOSTS file entries to make it / force it to work... try that, see if it helps!

(If the explanation in it is NOT enough, Private Message Clutch to have him walk you thru it...)

Oh oh oh!!!

Hey, on the troublesome machine... can you see users in its user groups using USRMGR.MSC on it locally?

(May be a stupid question, but can you??)

* The problem may be right there...

P.S.=> Let me know, & let us all know if using Clutches LMHOSTS technique helps... the problem may be in the WINS section of your connection too... another possible! apk
