Installing from CD works fine, but running the game makes it crash to desktop immediately after title screen. Setup doesn't work either, all compatibility modes tested for both executables.

Propably a DirectX issue -> WIN9x only.

Correction to my original post. Here's what you need to do:

You might not be able to get SETUP.EXE to run at all - if you receive a "General Protection Fault" or "Integer divide by 0 during install" error when running setup, here's what you need to do:

1) delete the SIERRA.INI file from your Windows directory. Do a search for "sierra" on your system drive, and remove the ini file.
2) Start SETUP.EXE and run the installation. SAY NO TO SYSTEM TEST! Continue when asked to confirm, performing maximum installation. The installation should now finish.

Now, find the new SIERRA.INI created under <WINDIR>, and open it. Find the [Config] heading, or if it's missing completely, adding it to the bottom of the file. Add CDRomDrives and CDROM parameters under it, so it will look like this ("X" being the CDROM drive letter you're using for
the game):

[Config]
CDRomDrives=X
CDROM=4

There is another .INI under your game directory, search it, and verify it also directs to your chosen CD-ROM drive letter.

This applies to most Sierra '95-'98 published Win9x games!
