under WIN9X you needed to run scan disk every so often to keep things running good as well as defrag the hard drive, under WINXP with NTFS how often do i have to do both of these? thanx

As often as you feel is necessary...

* The Operating System will schedule these if you need them mostly since it detects & sets a dirty flag for that when data is not properly flushed to the disks!

Times like in the event of errors of data not being committed to disk say in the event of an incomplete system shutdown or crash!

It's alot more "intelligent" than its predecessors, & more stable/secure + recovereable if you elected to use NTFS filesystems!

(Not saying you cannot run them manually to check, by all means, do so at your leisure/discretion, it is certainly NOT going to hurt doing it by any means yourself manually every now & then!)
