As of 22 April 2003, AMD has released its new processor OPTERON with 64-bit architecture. Opteron is AMD’s first 64-bit processor that support multiprocessing and it aims the server/workstation market. It is all a brand-new processor and uses the K8 core. You may also have heard of K8 as Hammer. Opteron uses 0.13 micron production technology however the packaging of the core is completely different. As you see in the picture below it uses ceramics and looks similar to 487 pin P4 series.
