Back in the days of the 486s and the initial Pentiums, cases did not play such an important role in the operation of a computer. Cases were thought of as mere housing for the valued parts inside, and no recognition was given to the design or appearance of the computer itself. Since then, cases have evolved into an integral part of a computer machine, due to cooling, etc, and much more effort is being given into making a computer look its best.
