So now all your fans are in the best possible arrangement, they're all clean, and the maximum amount of air is flowing through them right? Wrong! Most cases have fan grills, and these grills are merely an area of the case with a few holes drilled in them, or if you're lucky are more like a grid. As well as collecting dust and creating noise, without a doubt case grills inhibit airflow to the fan. How do they create noise? Well, when the fan is sucking in air, air has to flow through the grill, when the air hits the grill, some of it goes through the holes, whilst the rest of it hits the grill itself, this creates turbulence for the air being sucked in, and this creates noise.
