Over the past month or so, I´ve described some of the benefits of using Windows 2000 when detecting and installing hardware. Not every hardware configuration change is smooth sailing, though. Recent experiences have reinforced some lessons I learned long ago.

My server is a dual-CPU 500-MHz Pentium III with 512 MB of RAM. Before the episode described here, the machine had two SCSI adapters: an Adaptec AHA-2940UW and an Adaptec AHA-1542CF. Seven hard disks and a DLT7000 are attached to the 2940. The 1542 connected the internal CD-ROM, an external CD-R, and an external DAT drive.
