While traveling in Europe with my old Canon Powershot S45 point-and-shoot digital camera, I came across a function on the device called "Stitch Assist," designed to help the photographer line up pieces of a multi-shot panorama for later stitching using specialized panorama-stitching software. Realizing its potential, I made as much use of it as I possibly could, and came up with some rather beautiful images that I was able to stitch together at home on my PC. Many of these shots were taken of broad landscapes with most detail lying in the background. However, I found that the shots with foreground detail tended to be impossible to properly stitch together, even with high-quality software. There were two problems with these shots. Firstly, even though I used the Stitch Assist feature, I still held the camera by hand, and there was just no way for me to keep the camera centered in space while I panned around the scene without using a tripod. But even if I had a tripod with me, the second issue would have reared its ugly head: parallax error.
