Microsoft will minimise its controversial ribbon interface in Windows 8 by default.

From The Inquirer:
Microsoft had previously written about the impending arrival of its ribbon interface in Windows 8 but the firm has gotten customer feedback to the extent that it will not maximise the interface by default on its upcoming operating system revision. According to Microsoft's data the vast majority of users did not change the size of the ribbon bar, with only six per cent minimising it if it was maximised.

Microsoft's data showed that 23 per cent of users would maximise the ribbon interface if it were minimised - a figure that Ilana Smith, a lead program manager on Microsoft's engineering system team described as 'heartening'. Although Smith said the data Microsoft has collected from Windows 8 beta users is not representative of the wider public, she went on to say that 'power users' preferred maximising the ribbon bar.
