Sensible upgrading

Apparently, you can considerably improve a year-old computer's performance if you drop a really big wad of cash and upgrade it to an Athlon 64 FX or top-end LGA 775 P4, plus a Radeon X800 XT or GeForce 6800 Ultra.
Wow. Who knew?
The other day, I decided to find myself a less drastic upgrade for my antique (by turbo-geek standards) overclocked P4 box. It needed a new graphics card, but would an upgrade to a cheap Athlon 64 be worthwhile, too?
