It's possible to assemble your own Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), using a separate battery, charger and inverter. I did it.

The result isn't elegant, and it isn't cheap, and it probably isn't something that most people would want.

But it's got a few large advantages over normal off-the-shelf one-box computer UPSes.
