TMD Fan Review

Dan's Data has posted a TMD fan review
Y.S. Tech's Tip-Magnetic Driving (TMD) cooling fans move the fan motor from the normal hub position to the rim of the rotor, which is supposed to do all sorts of good things for the fan's performance.
The weird motor design also happens to make the fan look spiffy. And there are a couple of other peculiar side effects.
I've checked out three Bitspower CPU coolers that use the same heat sink but different fans - two conventional 80mm fans, one 70mm TMD unit.
Does the TMD fan win? Does it make an interesting noise? Why is the motor on the rim, but the bearing still in the middle? What does gomphosis mean?
