Sudhian Media has posted a new guide: Upgrading Systems Based on Socket 423 / 478 Platforms

Normally a comprehensive chipset roundup / upgrade guide for a processor would come much later in the product's life, as once-new systems began to truly fall behind and supporters of the platform looked to their options while keeping some or most of their current hardware. In the case of the Pentium 4, however, several factors have combined to make publishing a guide at this point a good idea.

First, even though the Pentium 4 is relatively young, a rather large number of chipsets have been released for it from multiple companies, each with different operating specifications and upgrade potential. This makes it more difficult to precisely identify which chipset one has, and what options may be available for it. Secondly, and more importantly, the P4's overall performance has increased dramatically over the last 12 months, with multiple core improvements, memory speeds, and all-new features becoming available. This in turn puts owners of an older P4 farther behind on the performance curve than mere GHz would indicate. With prices on motherboards and components currently low, it’s a good time to be planning an upgrade; hence the nature of this guide.
