WSUS administrators may be interested in Virginia Tech's newly opensourced "VT WSUS" project. With source and instructions to build provision-able desktop client, data roll up mechanism, and delegated access website for status and reporting, its goal is to make WSUS more manageable, functional, and beneficial for WSUS admins AND their clientele.
