As most of you now know, Windows XP is built on the Windows 2000 engine and merges the reliability and stability of Windows NT with all the digital media and gaming capabilities of Windows 98 and Windows Millennium. Microsoft continues to tout Windows XP as the most important operating system release since Windows 95. You might ask whether this is true. Well, as I later explain, it depends what you want your operating system to do for you. It is very hard to disagree that Windows XP introduces the most dramatic design change to the Windows experience since Windows 95.

On Friday June 29, Microsoft deemed build 2505 of Windows XP worthy of RC-1 status. Microsoft has recently announced that it will freeze the user interface (UI) and the inclusion of all new features and drivers with this release. Between RC-1, RC-2 and the Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build, Microsoft will surely fine tune Windows XP by continuing to refine performance and reliability. Accordingly, the following Windows XP RC-1 review will mainly focus on the new features and UI with an occasional word concerning speed and stability.
