I gotta do it, for the old DOS gamers like me that might like these ALOT as I do...

OpenGL patch ports, for your DOS oldies anyone? These games? They were designed for performance on 486's... they absolutely SAIL/FLY on today's Pentium III or better!

Ones like ZDoomGL, for Doom I & II are pretty widely known...

(It was like getting 3 new games to be honest, old ones I really got into since I still think DOS based games had better gameplay & plot + atmosphere vs. the technology & 'flash' concentration in games I see today alot in the First Person Shooter Genre, my fav!)

WELL, some thoughts on them! Man! NICE!!! Really nice... especially JHexen! Read on:

------------------------------------------------------------------

JHEXEN & JHERETIC:

JHexen Pic

Jhexen download link
http://www.doomsdayhq.com/files.php?pro=1

Just click the DOWNLOAD links at the top right, you can get each game individually, OR go for the unified "doomsday engine" with launcher (nice one).

JHeretic Pic

Jheretic download link
http://www.doomsdayhq.com/files.php?pro=1

Again, just click the DOWNLOAD links at the top right, you can get each game individually, OR go for the unified "doomsday engine" with launcher (nice one).

JHexen & JHeretic have some really NEAT things in them, & multiplayer OpenGL from what I read up on it is even working in JHexen!

This is great, I can play GLHeretic, the first one in this series now again & also GLHexen basically now with modernized display engines!

(NOW thanks to this programmer Jacko (interesting guy, I read his BIO, ex-military man too) has made that possible for us all, & VERY high quality work!

I love the NEW controls options, freelook, & even sound and display options available... not only the OpenGL'ness of it now! Heck, even the options menu "Zooms" to the screen fading in as it creates itself, a nice touch!

------------------------------------------------------------------

NEWWOLF3d:

NewWolf 3D Pic

Wolfenstein GL here:
http://wolfgl.narod.ru/

EXCELLENT as well... this is probably still one of my fav games of all time, as primitive as it is with all right angled walls and single floor levels only & what-not but the atmosphere & suspense is there in it like the original.

I especially liked the ability to change the controls with the mouse now, I can click on the right button to move forward!

The original by IDSoftware/Apogee did not offer such an option.

For me personally?

This is great, because I used to play the original SO long thru the night my right shoulder was sore from pushing the mouse around my desk to move forward!

LOL, I am a mouser in First Person Shooters, no "up-button" forward moving for me here!

(I wish 2 things would happen for it: Mouse Free-Look & also the ability to save games seems to be not working for me at this point!)

Still, the young Russian Fellow, DarkOne has done a tremendous job so far & lent life to an old game for me here...

One more oldie that has gone OpenGL for me with GLZDoom, JHexen, JHeretic, & now GLWolf3D too!

------------------------------------------------------------------

ZDoomGL & JDoom:

JDoom Pic

Jdoom,
http://jdoom.newdoom.com

ZDoom & ZDoomGL (both are needed, & just the DOOM I & II .wad files copied to your disk to play them)

ZDoom Pic

http://www.doomworld.com/doomgl/zdoomgl.htm

Both awesome... seriously, especially GLZDoom! Wait until you see the plasma rifle's firing! Looks like Romulan Missle Torpedoes or Klingon phasers from the StarTrek films! Modern FreeLook & coronas & texture bump maps options plus sound tuning like the above games here are a given as well...

------------------------------------------------------------------

PERFORMANCE:

ALL 4 Games play TREMENDOUSLY fast...

Running on a Dual Pentium III 1127mhz overclocked with a GeForce III powering the graphics. All on Windows XP... finally, an NT based Os that can REALLY do the games! Even in their native DOS forms without these patch ports to OpenGL or Direct3d!

------------------------------------------------------------------

OVERALL THOUGHTS/FEELINGS & IMPRESSIONS:

Those older DOS games REALLY concentrated on gameplay, & atmosphere!

The OpenGL rendering makes both games LOTS better than the original as the enemies that were sprite drawn now are sharper & more clarified than before, but with QuiCunix Anti-Aliasing turned on here on my GeForce III?

They are LOADS more sharp than being DOS style sprite animated, bitmaps being blasted thru the video frame buffer blockiness now due to OpenGL display use!

*

(Definitely, a SMILEY face on this one!)

APK

P.S.=>If anyone that reads this post likes those old DOS games, DO GIVE THESE OPENGL PORTS A SHOT! They breathe new life into some classic DOS oldies by changing them from sprite animated & bitmap blasted to screen OpenGL rendered modern games basically! apk

I tried setting up DoomGL last year, but didn't have much success. I actually ahve full copies of them now though, and now that I know about NewWolf I'm testing that out with my Wolfenstein3D/Spear oF Destiny installer

This is not DoomGL I am pointing you to for the links above, but JDoom (good stuff) and even better, is ZDoomGL!

* I too had trouble with DoomGL as well, but found these ports (one from PMistry in JDoom) & ZDoom + ZDoomGL, the better one, myself about a year back now... do try them, bet they work for you.

On the NewWolfGL one I posted a URL to above for download:

Did you download this one I put the link up to above?

See, there is another OLDER one called "WolfGL" that bombs out on me as well, & will not run at all...

The older WolfGL does not bomb the OS, but bombs itself out... so, do try THIS one as well from the download link above.

(It's not as nice/perfect as are JHeretic, JHexen, JDoom or ZDoomGL, but is pretty good here running as I stated before on this hardware makeup I use listed next below)

1.) Dual Pentium III 1127ghz overclocked
2.) 512mb PC-133 SDRAM by Micron set Cas/2 + Turbo in BIOS plus 4 way interleave
3.) GeForce III by VisionTek

* All on Windows XP fully Windows Updated/Patched using GeForce III gateway driver update from MS...

APK

P.S.=> Get back to me with your hardware makeup & which versions you used of those OpenGL ports & if you in fact tried the ones I listed URL's to above, thanks... apk

Alot of people get confused over the names of some of the ports:
DoomGL, GLHeretic, and GLHexen are outdated ports that were basically first attempts in the field. They were good but only on 3dfx hardware, and didn't offer much in terms of options. JDoom/JHeretic/JHexen are FAR Superior [they support GL AND DIRECT3D with equal quality, pick the one your card likes best] , they absolutely rock and have Quake style options and menu screens and multiplayer setups. NewWolf is probably the best WolfGL port. ZdoomGL is a GL version of Zdoom, which is required for some WADS. There is also Doom Legacy which has some GL functionality too. Oh by the way, I recommend that you guys check NewHexen
http://www.raven-games.com/hosted/newhexen/
This port for HEXEN 2, yes Hexen 2, adds some fog, incorporates the Demoness character into normal Hexen 2, so if you don't own the Mission Pack you can still use her in normal Hexen 2 with this port. This port is also a base for a future community mission pack.

PMistry,

You are a treasure trove of gaming port knowledge man... I am loving it replaying these games with non-grainy DOS bitmaps blasted to video buffers & sprite style animations.

Nostalgia, with a modern twist is what these games are to me!

* They remind me of hotrod, lol, how so you may ask?

Think of a 57 Chevy... plain one!

But, if you put on:

1.) Mag wheels & slicks
2.) Beef up the suspension w/ ladder bars & airshocks & front gas adjusteables
3.) Put in a SuperCharger & down the compression for it
4.) Use tuned header exhausts manifolds
5.) Put in an NOS kit (nitrous oxide injection)
6.) Use a High-Rise Intake Manifold
7.) Use dual holley carbs 850's on that intake (or fuel injection)
8.) Build the heads by boring them out and port & polish them
9.) Add a big camshaft & increase the lift & duration with it
10.) Use roller rockers & pushrods tips too
11.) Add on some lightweight pulleys & a "flex-fan"?

THEN add it up then put on the Cherry Red imron paintjob with lacquer finish... Well, this is "NOT YOUR DAD'S OLDMOBILE" as the saying goes! This is not your Dad's DOS game anymore.

(To me? These revamped modernized ports have all the stress on good tunes, plot, & atmosphere that was done in the DOS days, with the hotrodding of a modern 32-bit OpenGL/DirectX 3D rendering engine... hotrodded for sure! Hey, they performed well on 486's AND FLY on Pentium III's...)

Thanks man for yet another one in this next hexen port!

GLQuake!

I might as well complete this thread about old DOS games that used bitmaps & sprites animations that now have really nice OpenGL or DirectX 3D ports/patches...

There is also a great patch for that in GLQuake 1.14 as well that I did not picture, but plays absolutely smooth, has OpenGL & is VERY nice, even water transparencies & textured bump-mapping and more...

Here is a screenshot & download link to GLQuake as well, might as well complete this post of 3rd party OpenGL/DirectX 3d add-ons for older DOS games:

GLQuake Download link URL:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/unsup/glq1114.exe

*

If you guys know any others? Put them into this post... apk

APK

P.S.=> This one also plays totally clean & really breathes life into an old classic! apk

Found, or rather re-discovered one I always really really liked alot:

Tomaz Quake 1.48!

* This one REALLY RULES! Much nicer than std. GLQuake 1.14 by FAR... adds bump mapping, fog, & lots more like natively transparent water (that's right! no vispatch needed!)

http://tomaz.quakesrc.org/

If you like GLQuake mods, this IS THE ONE to get! Check out some of these screenshots:

Colored Lightning with ambient glows:

Smoke fog trails on bazookas & Nuke Grenades:

Ejecting shells from guns:

Fog effects fully Red, Green, Blue FOG controlleable:

Mirroring effects:

Much more too...

*

APK

P.S.=> THIS is what Quake I should always have been... apk

LOL. I forgot about that Quake port, that port is far better than the original GL Quake, its not so dark...I played both Quake Mission Packs with that port and it was great.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is an OpenGL port for Terminal Velocity. Not so much for the updated graphics, I can live wothout those, but so I can actually get the game running on my nVidia graphics card. Some bright spark at nVidia decided it would be a good idea to leave paletted texture support out of the Riva TNT (and every successive chipset too I believe) and since TV relies on paletted textures I can't play it.

All the game does is open a DOS Window (presumably to load up in) then it quits and leaves me scratching my head

Please please help me!
ps, is that mod meant to be run like QUAKE.EXE -game [mod folder] ?

Terminal Velocity works fine in Connectix Virtual PC.

In 2k/XP DOS box it'll run but the graphics are very shaky. Also of course no VESA.

Yeah I did but I tried a demo of Fury3 and it wasn't as good... especially in the music department, the track from Tei Tenga in the original TV owns.

I did try it with Virtual PC but it was just too slow. Maybe that was because I was using Win98SE as the virtual OS... When I get my machine working again (the fans in the power supply and graphics card both need replacing) I'll try again with DOS as the OS instead...

I have Fury 3, and it does run on W2k and XP, but it sucks. But you need to keep things in perspective with the original Win95 games, as they were as quirky as the operating system.

I have all of the original games:

Doom (1,2,Final,etc)
Wolfenstein
Heretic(1,2)
Hexen(1,2)
Duke3d
Blood(1,2,etc)
Shadow Warrior
Quake (1,2,3,etc)

and some other FPS games and have all the mission packs etc. These are all old and original versions. I want to play them on XP (if possible) and more importantly I want to play them with the updated graphics and sound that is mentioned in this thread.

Can someone PLEASE provide specific links to do this for all of these games. Plain english and specific links and instructions if possible...for dummies

Thanks VERY much in advance. These old games are the best and I'd love to play them again.

How about MAME? Can old arcade games be played in XP?

Thanks again.

NO PROBLEM: They are here below. They were in my first post too.
Mame32 works fine in XP.

What you'll love about these on modern CPU's? EVEN With OpenGL overhead??

Is they FLY!!! Super-Fast... they were designed for performance in the era of the 486, & sail now powered by modern high mhz cpu's! BIGTIME large.

I gave the URL's to certain of your list in my postings in this thread to make them OpenGL or DirectX 3D in NT based Os' (2k/XP with sound for sure too, not sure on NT4).

SEE FIRST PAGE OF THIS POST, I updated all the screenshots & links on 12/20/2002...

Thanks!

I have NewWolf3D, JDoom, JHexen, JHeretic and GLQuake and they all work great! (except for GLQuake being dark and not looking nearly as good as the screenshot).

Now I need to get Blood (I found something called qBlood http://www.planetblood.com/qblood/ but haven't checked it out yet), Duke3D (glDuke project was killed) and Shadow Warrior.

I still haven't gotten to Mame32 yet either.

Anyhow, just wanted to say thanks!

I found a fix at http://www.planetquake.com/frib/glquake.html#Idgamma . I used the author's pak2.pak file. However, even though it fixes the problem with darkness, the quality isn't great. In fact, regular Quake looks better. It does at least work so that I can play it in XP.

If it makes any difference, I'm using a TNT2 Ultra card. I did read that 3dfx cards provide better results in glQuake.
