When it comes to game modification, the enthusiasm is always there, but the time and patience gets lost over the months, and then game projects never come out.

Doom Millennium was supposed to be the best Doom wad ever made, it seems like it is dead, but it was scheduled to come out in 1999, they had updates in 2001 that the project was still coming, but its now 2004, I should check up on it.

The Quake 1 to Quake 2 project, was great, they got the first few levels done, but that was about it.

The Quake 2 Generations mod was really great, it had the Doom guy and his weapons, along with the Quake guy and the Quake 2 guy and the Wolfenstein guy all in 1 mod. Each guy had their own weapons and abilities, for example the Doom guy could drop large distances without getting hurt because of his suit. But the project got into beta but never went beyond that.

Also the Blood 1 to Quake project, called Qblood disappeared but I played the first 3 levels and it was amazing.

Oh lets not forget Duke Nukem Forever or Prey, Prey got canned even though 3D Realms said it would come for sure. As for Duke Forever, I doubt it would be available, that game is in one messed up development cycle. If it does come out, it will be because some other company took over the development. That game was supposed to 1997.

Its just too bad, but I don't blame the guys, it can get tiresome especially since you get no money really. But I think the idea is to get noticed.

I wish this team all the best and luck, it is promising.

Yup, other things come up in life too that take precedence. This applies to SO many things & where I see it the most?

Amongst folks in bands (musicians) the most really in my life @ least - They get a REALLY GOOD SET OF THEM TOGETHER, & something always pops up in their personal lives or they conflict & boom... goodbye excellent band!

I did, & still it is hanging... what was supposed to be so "great" about it?

This I had seen online in multiplayer & it WAS fantastic... I played levels from end of Quake I in Quake II motor (or, was it Quake III? Not sure...) and it looked great!

(End level where main demon dwells in magma/lava pit throwing fireballs @ you until he hits you while you try to lower the dual lightning posts @ right & left of this onto him while running around rectangular platform above him).

This sounds awesome... is there a sample of it somewhere I can test it out with? Especially on these new game motors we are posting about here in this thread.

(Thanks!)

Somehow, & it is a shame, I have a feeling this game will never materialize... I wonder if it will ever just be let out anyhow.... ? Just as a freebie @ least!

That & to eventually probably get picked up to either work on YOUR work & finish it for larger resale OR to get picked up to work on teams that work on other projects like it.

Nothing demonstrates skills like real experience you can see/use/test!

I do as well, especially on the Duke Nukem one!

The Doom Millennium was supposed to be the best because of all the great features the team was incorporating into the MOD. Keep in mind that this was back in 1999, and Doom Millennium was like an early attempt at a really good source port for Doom. Although with Doomsday, the features seem kinda dull.

The WADs levels are what seem the most impressive, they have taken down the screenshots but there are some amazing screens of detailed level design for Doom, there are new weapons, new monsters, and new abilities like jump. The weapons and monsters are incorporated without losing other monsters. (No Sprite Replacements like in other WADs) The team also incorporated native Windows support, CD audio, enhanced MIDI, full mouse control, etc, but again this was 1998/1999.

As for the Generations MOD, you can get info here, there might be a beta download or pre release or even a 1.0 release of the project. http://www.planetquake.com/generations/

I've read this whole thread and all the OpenGL ports that I use have been mentioned... except for one. What? No GLDuke??? You all need to check out JFDuke3D:

http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/index.php?p=jfduke3d

This port has fulfilled all of my Duke3D needs. What a great game!

I know pretty much all of those ports, EDGE and PR Doom, there was also MBF, Boom ports, and yeah the Vavoom Project has been around forever.

Thanks for compiling and contributing all those links for those Quake games, I gave that Hexen 2 Unofficial patch a whirl awhile back, its nice to see someone doing that,

pmistry,

Check out bobby64's post above mine I replied to:

A working GLDukeNukem port!

* Thought that MIGHT just be of interest to you!

APK

P.S.=> I am into it, it looks nice & one to follow (screenshots look good in it & what-not) since it is underway & author says it is still a work-in-progress that works, but MIGHT have a few glitches... still, best one I've seen to date!

NOW? I just have to find my "Duke Nukem" Cd-rom for install... I seem to have misplaced it here in my Cd-Rom archives!!! Argh, & I really wanted to try this one out too... apk

Well, I have FINALLY found my old "Duke Nukem 3D" Cd & started running the BUILD OpenGL rendering engine version port of GLDuke noted above... & it's PRETTY GOOD!

(Bit grainy, but it IS now in OpenGL & has NOT 'crashed out' on me yet!)

I am still @ the FIRST level, tuning its settings & what-not, but it runs alright!

* ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE HERE THUSFAR? Sound...

(My motherboard's using its onboard sound by RealTek, & I am guessing the developer builds around SoundBlaster only... but, not totally sure! I will have to write him for more on it!)

Whoa, I just noticed something - @ 15,500++ views? This particular posting thread REALLY "took off"... excellent!

APK

P.S.=> Too bad on the sound part here, because 1/2 the fun of this game? Was hearing the wise-*****s & remarks Duke said thruout the game, lol... like when he sees himself in the bathroom mirrors in games & says "Damn! I'm lookin' GOOD!" lol... apk

No problems with audio in jfDuke3D here.
Running it on sis648 mobo, onboard audio, with SoundMAX audio drivers.

LOL! Man, that was NOTHING since that point apparently... nearly 20 g's & counting now!

(I'd wager HEAVILY this is coming off of GOOGLE digging this site's forums posts up like mad now... well, that + time since the last posting which was 2-3 months back/ago!)

Good post thread for gamers: Especially to save ca$h by 'recycling/reconstituting' your OLD games if you have any listed here!

APK

P.S.=> STILL, "not TOO shabby"... but, not compared to the "battle of the computers" one!

(But, then again, that one's got 'sticky post' first-page status too, no matter what, & cannot 'fall off' from page #1... )

Anyhow, to quote an OLD Metallica lyrics from Disposable Heroes?

"Back to the FRONT!"

^
^
^

& up, uP, UP & AWAY (ala Superman since that's on the toob tonite in "SmallVille", & I rarely miss it )...

& NO more being "Trapped under ice" w/ this post-thread... apk

Updates to alot of these games have happened recently, for those of you into taking your old games to a NEW level of DirectX or OpenGL 3D graphical display (as well as new features in them)?

Here is some news:

JDoom is up to version 1.86 & ROCKS! Especially since the Doom Retexturing project & ABBSPACK v 3 models pack were released!

(Both are for yielding better textures on all objects & better player & weapon + objects models in the game).

BOTH make for actually LIGHTER/SMALLER & yet better looking than stock models from IDSoftware were AND nicer weapons models as well as player models + items you pickup & powerup from etc., for less pixelated & more triangles per square area etc. for finer details on ALL items.

(E.G.-> Better weapons, bullets, powerups items, wall/ceiling/floor/columns, enemies bodies textures & explosions too!)

You'd have to see it to believe it is about all I can tell you!

* They're pretty much doing what Half-Life did (which was take a Quake I engine iirc, & improve it alot more, but this time for DOOM I & II etc. )

OH, Quake II "evolved" also got updated too, but getting the file from its download site is a PAIN on "fileplanet" etc.

APK

P.S.=> URL's for this is/are:

JDoom 1.86:

http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

AbbsPack & other 3d models:

http://www.doomsdayhq.com/files.php?pro=2&class=4&type=6

Doom Retexturing Project Addons:

http://www.doomsdayhq.com/files.php?class=4&type=3

(So, there you go, & if you're into this? Have @ 'em... enjoy! )

apk

The retextured Heretic textures available on Doomsdayhq.com are very high detailed and look great with aniosoptropic filtering enabled.

Hey YOU! What's up man...? LTNS!

* The guy who got me into & started on this thread (from another forum, ages ago no less) appears!

P.S.=> You're right, the JHexen & JHeretic were also improved and have 3rd party objects + characters & textures enhancements also... links for those are on the last page (prior to this one) in fact, I just looked again! apk

FULL HERETIC!

(Only a 6.5mb download too... awesome!)

In theory, Heretic isn't abandonware, it can still be bought brand new from idsoftware's website. Actually the whole argument of abandonware is a gray area, since all the major companies still own the copyrights for those games. Even if you can't buy them in the store, but places like Ebay you can snag a good, clean, copy of Heretic for less than 10 dollars.

Man, what to do then? Remove the URL link above??

EDIT PART -> LOL, guess that's settled - one of the mods did, cannot blame them either since this seems to be "up-in-the-air" here on whether it is or not.

(I don't want a "*****" type link posted in here either, you know??? It said "abandonware" in its URL & that seemed like it must have been... but those foreign websites? Well, you never know, especially if the language it's in isn't a strongsuit for you... )

The whole site was in the French language where I found it online !

(Actually, I got clued into it years ago, but cannot recall from where or from whom anymore! I found it while tearing thru my bookmarks/favs actually in my games section in them luckily because I downloaded this YEARS ago & the .WAD file in the .ZIP I had was corrupted & failed the CRC-32 check that WinRar runs over it prior to extracts... but, I knew I had a reference to it somewhere! )

I mean, finding the DL link for it was difficult enough on the webpage it's hosted @ there, because it was in what appeared to be French (only 2-3 years of French under my belt from highschool that hasn't been exercised in 22 years here) on the webpage for it.

?

* Not sure what to do here! Aha, well the mods were, & again: I don't blame 'em!

APK

P.S.=> In ANY event -> Wilhelmus, lol, that signature of yours just keeps getting better: "I am Pentium of Borg. Accuracy is futile. You will be approximated". That's Phunny! Good one... apk

Hey Tomay, LTNS as well... that's FIRST & FOREMOST!

Secondly in reply:

Nope, I just use the data files from the older games I have that 'qualify' here with OpenGL or DirectX ports for display use (like .WAD files from Doom, Heretic, & Hexen, or .pk3 stuff from Quakes etc.) & run them via these far & VASTLY improved OpenGL/DirectX ports.

(They rock man, they REALLY do, & if you haven't tried 'em? DO! You won't want to go back to playing them as bitmap & sprite animations only all grainy & washed out blasted out to the screen my man... trust me on that!)

* Best part? They were designed to fly on 486-Pentium I cpu's mostly & FLY on today's high-ghz systems...

And, that's even with the OpenGL overlay paint overheads and 3rd party addons to them!

E.G.-> I easily push 100-120fps or more on JDoom I & II, JHeretic, or JHexen EVEN WITH 16x AntiIsotropic set and 8x AntiAliasing, along with 3rd party EXTRA textures, characters, powerups, & weapons added to these games others have done to enhance them further!

You have to admit: That's PRETTY FAST! They run like smooth glass, even in firefights & crowds in battle.

The DoomsDay engine is the one I would MOST strongly recommend for OpenGL or DirectX renditions of Doom, Heretic, or Hexen.

For Quake I? Tenebrae or Telejano.

For Quake II? Quake II "evolved" or Quake II "max"...

(All/Each are OUTSTANDING! )

You know who can help you THERE if you are into that & doing the 'nostalgia' thing, or just don't have an OpenGL or DirectX port more modern analog/redo of a particular game?

DosFreak.

He's quite expert on tools you may need (like VDMSound/DosBox etc.) to get sound running or for your display to work right!

APK

P.S.=> On the Voodoo I/II/III family? IIRC, you need a special version of the OpenGL32.DLL file put into the game's directory as a "private dll" (vs. %WinDir%\system32 housed publicly accessible via the system's %PATH% & dynamic link library search patterns governing ruleset I have posted here elsewhere as a reference to others in other posts.)... apk

The GL Quake addon files as well as Hexen II, have the necessary OpenGL32.dll file that is designed to work with Voodoo cards for GL support. I just don't know how to get glide working on those cards or GL working in a DOS environment, but I do remember it was possible.

Well I kinda never got used to the new forum. I somehow don't really like it. And the forum kinda faded, nice to see you still keep up the maximum posts.

I bought a laptop with a mobility radeon m6. I doub it'll be any good for doom 3, but some older games should rock. I still regret selling my quake 1 cd.

Unfortunately I can't find much time to play games. It's all work work work...

Heck, the FEEDBACK section of the forum? Allows you to make suggestions, & of them all?? IMO, only the SEARCH function needs beefing up... but, when folks made suggestions, Philipp's fielded a good 99.9% of them already - but, you've gotta make them there!

(I bet you're like I was - a "UBB Addict" & so accustomed to those, that anything else seems "WEIRD" by comparison. UBB stuff does rock, but for something that Philipp made by himself here? It's outstanding. He fixes that SEARCH motor, & I think personally he has a "UBB KILLER" in this one... )

Actually, there are more people online here than ever before... the "What happened to this forum" post in the OTHER section shows it. We went from 800 -> 1000 -> 1500 -> 2000++ @ any 1 point in the day if you look @ counts of users online here at this site @ any given moment during the week!

It's my fav. spot online because folks here don't give one another alot of garbage, like some other sites have members that do & constantly almost. It's really bad @ some other sites that way, but not here. Good crowd/crew!

I've found also, that helping others, helps yourself... especially on techno-details in this field: It's GREAT review! And, for the times I've helped many people online? They too, in turn when asked or could?? Have helped me. What goes around really DOES come back around!

Well, there is ALWAYS the "bargain bins" & CompUSA etc.! The 1 thing OLDER games really had going for them strong? Atmosphere... not so much in "technological-flashiness", but more gameplay! Hard to describe, but I think you know what I mean!

The nice part about work of guys like Jaakko Keranen (creator of the JDoom, JHeretic, & JHexen DOOMSDAY Engine) is, that techno-flashiness? It's been added...

Especially to ones that didn't have OpenGL or DirectX 3D display engines!

(And, since they were originally built for 286-486 gameplay? These games, even w/ 3rd party addon maps, characters, items, powerups, + OpenGL or DirectX 3D overheads, etc.?? FLY on today's modern high GHZ cpu & vidcard driven rigs! )
