Rise Of The Triad Freezes

hi i'm new here, i have recenlty upgraded to win xp & i need help to get rise of the triad to work, the problem is that when i hit the down button on the menu the game freezes, despite of that the games works fine, it's just the menu which is the problem

don't worry about the sound i use vdmsound

what would be my options
