You're better off doing a FRESH install, especially over Windows ME Antonio!

* You saw that for yourself pretty much when you installed XP on its own & it ran fine! Then, on updating ME with XP later as your 'experiment' there (good to do, best way to learn I think is by making mistakes)? You hit hassles!

You're not alone there either: You are one of 100's of folks I have seen that did 'update' installs & ran into hassles eventually over time by updating ANY Win9x series of OS into an NT based one like NT/2000/XP.

APK

P.S.=> As good as Microsoft is, I think that the registry itself is VERY complex, maybe TOO complex, for even their best techs to have it all memorized... especially between the 2 family types of Windows (9x the 16/32 bit hybrid vs. NT based fully 32-bit ones), to get update migration type setups 110% perfect! apk

You can install another operating system generally to another folder...

HOWEVER, if you used NTFS as your filesystem?

You would have to format the disk (i.e.-> Destroy data on the disk) because Win9x/ME cannot deal with NTFS filesystems natively!

I don't know what filesystem you used, so this next suggestion MIGHT be your best bet: another XP install, but fresh to another folder/directory rather than C:\WINDOWS where your messed up one is now no doubt!

E.G.-> I would install a FRESH XP copy, but direct it to another folder (instead of C:\WINDOWS, you could install it to say C:\WINNT instead... the install from CD allows you this flexibility @ some point in it, just pay attention to it as it installs is all!)

ALSO - When the install asks you if you want to format the drive, or leave existing filesystem intact? Do the latter... leave it intact, that way your data is still there!

This SHOULD preserve the data on the disk too odds are... no destruction!

* Good luck, that oughtta do it!

APK

P.S.=> If you have any other questions? Just ask... but, that should do it for you though! apk

kool thanx, i didnt change the filesystem when i installed it so its still fat32, but for some reason my computer doesnt want to boot from cd, i got it enabled in bios but its just not doing it(it boots linux cd's thou), so is there a way to run the winxp install program from dos(winme startup floppy), i tried but it gave me the good old "cant run in dos" crap, so i need to know if there is a way, coz i really dont want to install me, and then xp, and then delete old xp, too much f*$@ing around considering i get home at like 6 and gotta go bed at 9, so not much time to mess round on computer

Hmmm, that's odd!

There are links here on the forums to "Bootdisks for XP" that you can obtain online... use the forums' SEARCH feature on the Main menu part in the upper right-hand-side of the screen, you will see it in the list there!

If that is not enough by searching the term BOOTDISK, then try this URL:

http://www.bootdisk.com

* For some reason, that sticks out as a place you can get the floppy disk images you can bootup XP from to install the Os from the CD that way!
