I was able to get this installed and working with zero issues per most of the setup info. I have the original CD disk I had purchased many years ago, so I was did not need to run the 1.01 download. However a little change was to keep a copy the BIN folder within the C:\RiskCD folder.

Yeah I know this is an old game....but nothing wrong with an old classic.

Under win7 64 i didn't get it to work (parallels win7 didn't start the virtual xp mode.. keeps initializing and than one time it finished with a message that not all worked?! integration?! or well forgot it..)

Unstalled xp in parallels then which seemed to work, but have problems with saving and loading. suddenly 220 armies pop up..

Has anyone the 1.1 patch and can upload it? the link to it doesn't work anymore. somewhere it stated that the 1.1 patch fixed something with saving and loading.. and where can i edit a config file to set the resolution fixed.. everytime i restart it, it changed to 640*480..

It is so frustrating for those of us with Win7 64bit to read how carelessly others say "I have not problem running Risk 95 on my win7 64 bit pc." Even more frustrating are ppl who show registry hacks they are not valid, like the one that starts with HKLM??? So plz, if you post a fix here, especially for win7, plz be clear, not

That guy who said to leave the resolution window open in windows 7 to get the colors correct is right. You will still occassionally have to refresh it though by going out of risk and then back in during execution.

Two more things I'd like to say about this game:

1.) The program drives up the CPU to 50% and my fan needs to go on periodically. Annoying. I don't see this program so cpu intensive.

2.) The game play has bugs and the AI is awful. Sometimes, either you or the computer army receives too many armies during its turn. Hard level is just the computer ganging up on you with no strategic intentions. Also, the interior territories are nearly impossible to fortify starting out, while the peripheral corners are too easy. The computer will also allow a weak fortification against another computer army, while for you it will never.

I have looked and tried all things at:
http://www.ntcompatible.com/compatdb/details/risk_windows.html

I am unable to install this game under compatibility mode 98/95/xp and just about every thing else. I have tried just about ever variation and I always have the same issue. Nothing.

I click on setup and nothing happens. No error, no loading screen, nothing.

I am on Windows 7, 32 bit. Others seem to have no issue installing in compatibility 95, which leads me to wonder what on earth is going on with my copy.

I tried to copy files and add my own registry strings as mentioned in the above post (which must be closed? I cant post to it, even tho I am logged in).

But a few problems were encountered, one being that the 366kb "risk.exe." file is not present on the CD.

I used the patch 1.10 instead (which I would have used anyways), but it keeps asking me to insert the CD into the drive.

Not only is the registry string pointing to the right folder which is mimicking the CD, but the CD is also in the drive! I have tried replacing the string to point to the drive, but it keeps asking to insert the CD...

Any ideas at all? I really dont see why others with the same systems can get this to install and run, and I cant even get it to install. Wont even give me a error, just does not work at all.

Awaiting a genius to figure this out, or point me in the right direction.

These instructions for the registry work for windows 7 64-bit, if you put the registry keys in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Hasbro Interactive

Since it is a 64 bit system, this is where it looks for 32 bit programs to load their registry settings from HKLM\SOFTWARE

For me the game won't install either. When trying to run SETUP.exe, a screen comes up which notifies me that the game isn't 64 bit compatible. Also when I select win 95 or 98/ME in compatibility mode, it still says it is incompatible. Anyone ideas how to get this working?

The game installed fine. When attempting to run, I get a black screen and the program no longer responds. I have tried various compatibility modes, screen resolutions, everything I can think of. Nothing will allow this program to run on my machine.

Risk will run under my Windows 7 (32 bit) on my box. I did the original install using Win95 compatibility mode. I initially tried running Risk in Win95 compatibilty mode, but ran into persistent issues with missing colors in the display. Using a suggestion from another post, I removed the compatibility settings and just ran Risk with the Screen Resolution dialog open. This seems to cure the display problems - except if screen lock activates (color issue apprears when I unlock) or if another application pops a dialog while Risk is running (new mail from Outlook for instance).

To get the colors working properly on the higher resolutions in Windows 7, try this: right-click your desktop and choose "screen resolution". When the screen resolution window opens, just leave it open and ignore it and run the RISK game. You should now be able to choose the 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions without the colors being scrambled. This works for me and I'm not even using compatibility mode, though I did use the compatibility mode to do the install.

I am using windows7 in 64 bit. I have switched the compatibility to windows 95 and I still cannot get Risk to install. It still tells me that it is not compatible with 64 bit.

I'm able to run Risk on my 32 and 64bit versions of win7 fine with win95 compatibility. The minor problems I have are as follows

On my 64bit toshiba laptop I don't get the full widescreen. I find the vertical black bars on the sides intolerable. I don't have this issue on the 32 bit machine and I'm not sure why.

The thing that's driving me nuts is that when I go into the system menu of the game and put the resolution up to 800x600 or 1024x768 when i get to the playing map the colors are not all there. You can see the map but not well.

I can however play the game flawlessly in the original resolution but I don't want to.

btw I have xp 32 dual booted on my toshiba Risk works fine but I have not been able to find an xp sound card driver for my vista designed laptop

I would recommend that anyone with a 64bit system set up a dual boot 32 bit os. There are still too many applications not even being conceived for 64bit ie my cell phone company came out with an update for my phone however I couldn't install it because it was for 32b systems only! That was the reason I installed xp on my laptop in the first place. And there are many legacy apps that I used happily in 95 that win7 won't even look at before telling me it's an invalid app.

I will find a solution to this Risk problem In win7 I'm close

I am desperate to either get this game running or to upgrade (downgrade) to 32-bit Vista. The image is activating but displaying an error dialog box that it cannot open the registry. The reason I know it is the application is that when I run the RISK.EXE from the FRENCH directory, the message comes out in French!

I tried to download the patch, but cannot find it anywhere. I have set the registry access to allow everyone to access each of the entries.

Thanks for any help possible. Hate to go through the work for 32-bit and then discover that it had nothing to do with it.

The string values should be placed in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hasbro Interactive\RISK

If the game still doesn't work, then you need to download the Risk 1.1 patch exe and copy it over your version in C:\Games\Risk

The patch can be downloaded here:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/risk/download_2532814.html

Hasbro Risk has been installed on Windows XP without a problem - I've also installed it on 3 computers running Windows 2000. Depending on your service packs for your OS, you might get away with simply selecting compatibility mode from a shortcut to the exe. All the above have been tested and work so the question remains - will it work on Vista or Windows NT? ;)

The Trymedia version loads fine. This is "Try Before You Buy" software ( trygames.com )
Also the 1997 version of the original retail cd installer works under windows 2000.

For the 1996 version from the original CD's - the installer will NOT work. The fix is below.
Create a directory on your hard drive and copy all the files from the cdrom into that directory.
Then create another directory on your hard drive ie C:\Games\Risk

Copy the following folders from the cd into c:\Games\Risk
ANIMS folder
BIN folder
GAMEGFX folder
PALETTES folder
SAVEGAME folder
SAVESETUP folder
VIDEO folder

Copy these files from the root folder on your cd to C:\Games\Risk
MCONNECT.DLL
MPLAYNOW.EXE
MPLAYNOW.INI
MPN.DLL
RISK.CNT
RISK.HLP

Copy RISK.EXE from the cd - you want the 366KB one from the English folder on the cd. This file goes into C:\Games\Risk

After this is done, remove the read only attribute from all files and folders in c:\games\risk

The last part to get this to work is to edit the windows registry.
Create a new KEY
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hasbro Interactive

Create a new KEY
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hasbro Interactive\RISK

Create a new KEY
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hasbro Interactive\RISK\1.10

Create a new STRING VALUE
"ABBOXPATH"
Modify
C:\Games\Risk\VIDEO

Create a new STRING VALUE
"BBOXPATH"
Modify
C:\Games\Risk\ANIMS

Create a new STRING VALUE
"CDPATH"
Modify
C:\RiskCD

Create a new STRING VALUE
"RISKDIR"
Modify
C:\Games\Risk

That's all there is to it. Run RISK.EXE to play. To uninstall, remove the registry entries you added, delete the two folders, and any shortcuts you made.
