5 Mistakes You Should Avoid When Buying A New Laptop

The laptop has, for many people, become the only home computer needed. Fast, yet portable, they offer the best of both worlds, and can be had for $500 (or less). Their lure is understandable. Yet a laptop is also more complex and, compared to a desktop, far less flexible. A desktop user unhappy with a monitor, keyboard or mouse can simply replace it, but laptop buyers have no options. This means picking the right system is both more important, yet also more difficult. Heres what to look out for if youre ready to open your wallet.

Acer Chromebook C720P-2600 Review

The ubiquity of Internet access, along with the increasing reliability and decreasing cost of online storage, means that you won't necessarily need to give up too much to replace your current Web-browsing laptop or desktop with a Chrome OS system like the Acer Chromebook C720P-2600. It adds a 10-point touch screen, double the SSD-based storage, and updated styling.

AMD Radeon R7 265 2GB Video Card Review

Last week AMD beefed up their entry-level and mid-range graphics cards with the introduction of the AMD Radeon R7 250X and the Radeon R7 265. It appears that AMD did this to help fill in both the performance and price between the Radeon R7 260x and the Radeon R9 270 ahead of NVIDIA’s rumored GeForce GTX 750 Ti launch. AMD did not send us their Radeon R7 265 reference card, but instead shipped us the Sapphire Dual-X R7 265 2GB GDDR5 OC with Boost. Read on to see how this card performs!

Bitfenix Phenon Mini-ITX case Review

One of the more dominant trends over the last year or so when it comes to computer cases is that more and more companies bring out small computer cases meant for mini-ITX motherboards that still can handle more powerful components. No longer do we have to settle with on-board graphics and a slow CPU. No, these computer cases are meant to work well even for the serious gamer.

The case we are reviewing today is a perfect example of that: the Bitfenix Phenom Mini-ITX case. This case is available in both mini-ITX and micro-ATX format although they actually share the same dimensions on the outside. On the inside the Phenom mini-ITX-case shares a lot of similarities with another of Bitfenix small cases, the Prodigy. One proof that this case should be able to house some serious hardware is that for example Webhallen.com used it for their Steam-machine on CES 2014. Read on to learn what makes us really like this case.

EVGA Z87 Stinger (Intel LGA 1150)

The intended base of any EVGA Hadron build, the Z87 Stinger is EVGA's answer to a high-end mITX OC solution. Built with a focus on features and overclocking, as with EVGA's high-end videocards and PSUs, the EVGA Z87 Stinger makes its mark, but does it sting like a bee, or is it only as annoying as a fly?

Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 vs iPad Air head-to-head Review

We pit Apple's iOS flagship against Samsung's first business Android tablet. For the past few years Apple's iPad has become an increasingly common sight in most offices, with many companies preferring its secure iOS operating system and user-friendly interface to those of competing tablets. But now Samsung has looked to establish its own position in the enterprise market with Android, creating its unashamedly productivity and security-focused Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet.

But with Apple already having a foot in the door, some have questioned whether the giant 12.2in tablet's software will be enough to persuade businesses to ditch the iPad.

Gamidas is a new manufacturer for gaming peripherals and so far we've never had any of their products for review. Today we're having a closer look at their Hermes gaming keyboard, which features mechanical CherryMX Blue switches. Other than that there is a huge wrist rest, so overall this might be a rather comfortable input device.

Gaming PC - February 2014

This computer system is specifically geared towards gaming. That means a PC with a high-end graphics card and a processor that is fast enough to support the GPU.

The rest of the configuration needs to be balanced as well. Since many gamers also enjoy overclocking their PC to improve performance, it is also important to choose a motherboard and memory that is suitable for this. Keep in mind that you will pay extra for that overclocking potential.

Just Cause 2 4-Years Later Reviewed

Is Just Cause 2 a game to remember and return to, or should we let it disappear like an exploded fuel tank? In my opinion this is a game to remember. The chaotic, open-world design can supply you with dozens of hours of fun, before and after finishing the final mission. The graphics stand up very well and the performance is excellent. It may have some shortcomings, but nothing to keep me from recommending it. If you like open-world games and making a game into your playground, Just Cause 2 is an easy game to recommend to you. You can also check out its many mods (there are more than the multiplayer mod) and its DLC. The DLC, by the way, only add weapons and vehicles for purchase in the Black Market. They can still be a lot of fun, especially as the items come fully upgraded, but do not add any greater content to the game.

Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ G3 32GB Flash Drive Review

What exactly is computer security? From an engineering perspective, encrypting your data with a strong key and a complicated algorithm ought to keep anyone away from your sensitive information. After all, if it takes a supercomputer a billion years to crack a 128-bit AES key, imagine what it takes to defeat something done with 256-bit AES encryption. In reality, as much as this sounds great on paper, this is certainly not the case. Regardless of how strong your security is, if someone comes up to me with a knife, and threatens me to give up my password, I would have done it in a heartbeat. But does this mean we should just leave everything out in the open? Probably not. In the same way we keep the front door of our houses locked, despite the fact someone can just break a window and get inside in about two minutes, sometimes we still take steps to prevent unintended audiences from getting a hold of your information. This is why my entire laptop is encrypted, just in case it gets stolen. The way I see it, this is just about being responsible with my data. Earlier last month, my colleague Aaron Lai tested out the Kingston DataTraveler Vault Privacy 3.0 32GB, an excellent hardware encrypted USB flash drive that delivers in both security an encryption for business users. Today, we will take a look at yet another hardware encrypted USB flash drive from the company, the DataTraveler Locker+ G3 32GB. Rather than focusing on business users, this sleek looking drive is made for consumers looking to be a little bit more responsible with the files they carry around. Being an update to the DataTraveler Locker+ G2 32GB I have reviewed last year, how much of a performance gain can we expect? We fired up our usual battery of benchmarks to find out.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2014), A Fantastic Revision

... It could be said that Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon series cuts through the stuffy corporate facade, offering something for the conference room or coffee shop with a sleeker physique and sports car-like good looks. The original ThinkPad X1 Carbon was initially released back in 2012 and at the time, its carbon fiber-infused chassis offered a rare combination of build quality and light-weight durability that Lenovo could still call a "ThinkPad" but with a style and feel all its own.

New for 2014, Lenovo has completely revamped the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, from the 4th generation Intel Haswell Core series processor under its hood, to its new higher density carbon fiber-filled polymer skins, a higher resolution display and even some major upgrades to the keyboard area. The previous generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon scored itself a HotHardware Editor's Choice award. Let's see if the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon has what it takes to earn that accolade again.

Motorola Moto X video Review

Android smartphone with almost untouched version of latest KitKat release. The Moto X is one of a select few smartphones to be released by Motorola during its brief tenure as a Google company.

As a result the Moto X features a close to untouched version of Google's latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system (OS). This is a definite selling point as the untouched skin means the Moto X should be able to receive updates for new Android versions faster than competing smartphones, which generally run customised versions of Google's mobile OS.

When it comes to video cards, there is only so much that a manufacturer can do to set themselves apart from the competition.
