Perhaps there is nothing as fickle as technology. For the recording industry technology has been both boon and bane. In the early 1980’s the advent of CD technology opened a world of opportunity for both audio manufacturers and the record industry and resulted in an explosion of interest in both high fidelity equipment sales and ever increasing sales for the recording industry. Life for the recording industry seemed good however a new technology soon became the center of the their attention: Digital Audio Tape, a technology that never became popular in the consumer arena yet sees some use in the Pro Sound Arena. Like the now nearly defunct cassette format DAT is a cassette reel, unlike cassette, it's possible to produce flawless digital copies from one generation to another. The recording industry fought this technology’s introduction in the United States tooth and nail and when the dust cleared DAT became nothing more than a historical footnote. Likewise the movie industry fought long and hard to kill the video cassette recorder, ironically VHS would turn into a massive revenue center for the movie industry and a whole new industry of video rental stores would open because of it.
