Heatsink technology has come a long way. The "best" ones used to be huge hunks of aluminum with a decent sized fan. Then the "hedgehog" came out and Delta 60mm screamers made performance even better. Companies such as Swiftech, Thermaltake, and Thermalright entered the market with larger heatsinks and better fans. However, the bigger/better fans created more noise and a "brute force" application became popular. This mold was broken in the air cooler market with other technologies, better fins in the heatsinks, and heatpipes.
