IPX is a network protocol similar to TCP/IP. To add it:

1. Start, Run, Settings, Network Connections, Local Area Network
2. Select Properties
3. Select Install, Protocol, Add
4. Select 'NWlink IPX/SPX/Netbios Compatible Transport Protocol'
5. Select OK
6. Select OK again

I am having trouble installing the drivers for IPX on Windows Vista. However when I go; Control panel; Network and Internet; Network centre; View Status; Properties; Install...; Protocol; Add... there is no IPX driver available for installation. I know IPX is quite old now but there must be an IPX driver installation somewhere. Please may someone help...? I have tried looking but I haven't found any free drivers for IPX.

The IPX protocol is no longer supported.

Well i found the file called NWLNKIPX.sys and I have copied it from my other computer to this one. I have put it in C:\WINDOWNS\systems32\drivers, however still IPX does not run... Is the only way to download it, by disc with the driver software?

Don't have a lot of time to look at this. Here are two Google references: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814987/
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

Sorry, I was in such a hurry this morning when I read this. Didn't realize you were referring to Vista. My mistake. Found this from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/library/plan/62ee8100-16b7-429f-a58c-71724339a36e.mspx?mfr=true
Hardly helpful.

You are probably a little ahead of the curve. Novell's board: http://www.novell.com/products/clients/ does not yet list a client for Vista. Novell will generally only come out with a client weeks or even months after an OS is released and Vista is still a work in progress, so if there is going to be support for IPX (and Wilhelmus is usually spot on when it comes to these things) this may be never as Wilhelmus believes, or many moons into 2007.

I understand. You are right it is only work in prgress and the final copy and not yet been released. Also I found infomation on another site stating that novell has not released that driver yet and that it could be released in future upgrades. However thank you all for your help... I just suppose I will have to wait

While you wait...

I installed IPX/SPX to Vista, but I am unable to config it and I am not sure if it even works...

(I dualboot with XP and Vista, so if you do not, you'll have to expand the files from XP CD.)

YOU DO THIS IN YOUR OWN RISK.

If you do this, take backups.

Requires: MS Windows XP (SP2):

1)
Create new folder named 'temp' to root of your Vista drive ( C: ).
Copy the following files from XP (or expand from XP CD) installation:

Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkipx.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkflt.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkfwd.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnknb.sys
Windows\System32\drivers\nwlnkspx.sys

Windows\System32\rtipxmib.dll
Windows\System32\wshisn.dll
Windows\System32\nwprovau.dll

(Following folder is hidden)
Windows\inf\netnwlnk.inf
Windows\inf\netnwlnk.pnf

to C:\Temp,
and to corresponding Vista folders.

2)
Control Panel->Network Center->Manage network connections.
Right-click your LAN connection and select Properties.

Click Install..., select Protocol and click Add...

The NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol may be listed on the Network Protocol list.
DO NOT SELECT IT.

Click Have Disk... Browse to C:\Temp. Select netnwlnk.inf.
Click OK.
Select NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS from the list.
Vista will tell you that the publisher could not be verified.
Click Install.

If all goes well, the protocol should be now installed.
Restart computer.

If this works, tell me.
If it doesn't... wait if the driver is officially released.

Good luck

<edit>
I copied the file from Finnish XP, so the protocol name in picture is different

However, when I try to do the same thing I did on my other computer, It says Error: Access is denied... I don't know what I did wrong or wether it is just the security...
