Change your shortcut's target to "X:\nfshs.exe" -patchrestart (where x:\ represents the application path and nfshs.exe represents whatever the executable is actually named)...

Soz it's taken me so long to check back here.

I only got it installed and ran it (FAT32 SHS) as an exercise in 'candoitedness.' I don't much care for racing games that don't involve massive destruction (Carmageddon makes me giggle (humans are so wierd)), so I couldn't even tell you if I got it running in HW acceleated mode or not.

How Did you Install it?
When I try to install, it says:
only win95/98!
I only can click ok and am back in win2k.

They have very detailed instructions for installing NFS in the games section. Follow that and it will work, but only in software.

You can get it into D3D mode if you follow the directions for the nfs4 demo:

"To play the game in Direct3D do the follow:
1. You'll need to have Need for Speed III installed on your computer (ie.Win98 partition) or your Need for Speed III CD handy for this to work.
2. Make a backup of the 3DData.dat file in the x:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes Demodsetup directory.
3. Replace the files in the x:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed High Stakes Demodsetup directory with the ones in your NFS3 Installation or your NFS3 CD.
4. Replace the 3DData.dat file with the backup you made in step 2.
5. Run 3D Device Setup, and choose "Direct3D Device 1". You'll get some error message about this being untested, ignore it.
6. Run the demo."

I have those files from nfs3, but I don't have server space. If someone wants to host the needed files let me know here and i will email them to you.

I've got the same error message about patch-restart etc. This is how I solved this:
- first download path 4.42
- installed the game under win98, run patch and 3dsetup
- import registry settings under win2k
- if you still get path-restart or missing data error msg. strip down NFSHS-registry entries to the following:

These registry settings work for me with enabled HW-acceleration and a TNT2.

BTW. The game runds a tad slower under W2k (3.81) vs. Win98 (3.76), but suprisingly no slowdowns in 32Bit on the Celtic Ruins track, if lot of smoke/sand effects appear
