My disk version seems to work fine under dosbox following the instructions above. I only applied the shadowup.exe fix (and ran update.bat). Note the above link is broken - use http://ftp.sierra.com/patches/pc/shadowup.exe

Oh, you may wish to go into the Windows volume mixer and display SW Synth (options, properties, playback) and turn it right down, the music scared me half to death).

Talkie (cd voice) version from the anthology disc (the one with the dragonfire demo).

1) Install the game using DosBox ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/). This will prevent a bug in the installer causing it to think you don't have enough disk space.

2) Perform a full install. This is necessary to apply bug fixes in the next step.

3) Extract the files from qfg4cd.zip to your game directory (c:\sierra\qganth\qg4cd\ by default). This will not overwrite any existing files. qg4cd.zip can be found at the following sites:
http://geocities.com/belzorash/
http://members.fortunecity.com/gabriel001/patches.html

4) Run the game from DosBox. Although you may get it running directly, DosBox will prevent many timing bugs and generally, sound works better.

If you find there is no narrator and the text disappears before you can read it, you probably didn't mount the CD using the same drive letter as you installed it with.

V1.1 (diskette version). The Windows version doesn't work under Windows XP. The DOS version does (go figure). The biggest problem with the DOS version is installing it. Go straight to step d) if you are installing from real floppy disks.

** This is for the Diskette version, NOT the CD (talkie) version. The CD version is installed differently and requires completely differerent updates. **

a) Run SETUP.EXE to install the Windows version. You should do this from a simple location like c:\qfg4\disk1 as the installer will crash with paths more than eleven folders/words deep. Likewise, make the destination folder a simple location.

b) Copy the files from \disk1\DOSONLY into the destination folder.

c) Rename SIERRA.EXE to temp.exe and run it to extract the final SIERRA.EXE.

d) Run INSTALL.EXE under DOSBox ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/) and setup your sound devices. I chose General MIDI and Sound Blaster. Roland works, but for me caused an apparent lockup (1 minute of blank screen) when launching the game.

e) Get the v1.2 update ( http://www.sierra.com/file_list.do?gamePlatformId=1807)
Save shadowup.exe to your game directory and run it, then run the newly extracted update.bat.

f) Ignore the Windows Shortcut as you will be playing the DOS version.
While the DOS version runs directly under XP, it is recommended to play the game under DOSBox. DOSBox emulates sound, lets you choose window or full-screen, and avoids bugs which make the game unfinishable on some systems.

on bugs:

-All updates (which fix show stopping bugs) should be installed before the game is played to avoid savegame incompatibility issues.

-QG4TS.TXT lists some workarounds for unfixed bugs. This file is included with the v1.2 update.

-The v1.2 update is really just the v1.1 patch, bundled with the "Import patch" and the "Note patch". These fixes wont be installed unless you run update.bat.

The presence of 54.HEP in the game directory indicates the import patch is applied. If 330.HEP has a timestamp of 1993 you may need the Note patch to avoid a major plot bug on some systems.

-The updates are also available from http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Arcade/7435/ under goodies -> downloads.
