AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (Thoroughbred) Review

VIA Hardware has posted a review on the Athlon XP2200+ based on the new .13-micron Thoroughbred core.
Comparing the maximum thermal power (Tmax) of Palomino to Thoroughbred we see a dramatic difference in the lower-end CPU’s, while the difference is far smaller at the upper end. The Thoroughbred version of the 1700+ CPU, for example, radiates 23% less wattage than the Palomino core, while the T-bred 2100+ radiates only 14% less than its Palomino counterpart. The explanation for the difference is found in the Thoroughbred’s need for additional voltage as the chip scales upwards. At 1700+, the T-bred requires only 1.5 volts compared to the Palomino’s 1.75, while the 2100+ and 2200+ both require 1.65V. This is a fairly large increase over a relatively small number of MHz, but will hopefully decrease as AMD continues to refine their .13 micron process.
