DisplayPort - A Look Inside

Bit-Tech published a feature looking into DisplayPort




It's not often that a new display interface is introduced, but in recent times it seems like there's been more activity than we're used to. With HDMI's move into the mainstream in 2005, talk of the new DisplayPort interface has been met with a degree of negativity from consumers -- many who question the need for yet another display interface.

I think a lot of that comes from people not understanding exactly what DisplayPort is all about, other than a reason to get more money out of consumers. DVI is just fine, right? And HDMI is DVI's replacement, isn't
it? These are a couple of the common questions I've seen crop up since
the DisplayPort 1.1 specification was approved by VESA back in April this year.

At the recent Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, I had the chance to sit down with some of the people behind DisplayPort in order to get a better understanding how this is going to affect our industry. Over the course of this article, I'm going to discuss the DisplayPort specification, along with looking at where the new interface will fit into the market. Additionally, I'll also look at what might be a very viable alternative to DisplayPort in the long run, as well...
