Elte Bastards posted an article on the ATI driver releases

If there's one thing that ATI drivers have been lacking since time immemorial, it's official support for their Mobility products - In the past, users have had to rely on either drivers from the laptop manufacturer (Which tend to be few and far between) or third-party tweaked drivers from the likes of Omega. CATALYST 5.6 sees the beginning of a shift away from this towards a single, official driver package from ATI that will support both desktop and notebook graphics products.

This shift begins with the addition of support for ATI's Mobility X700 and X800 range of parts - ATI are beginning their focus at the top, as the users who require frequent driver updates are most likely to be gamers and enthusiasts who want to play the latest titles with the latest driver releases. Over the course of time, ATI are aiming to support all of their DirectX 9 mobile GPUs, so if you're the owner of one of ATI's last generation Mobility products - Sit tight, your time will come.
