One of the biggest problems with a lot of today's browsers is that they've evolved into bloatware. Instant messaging, email, etc. have all been bundled into "suites" and caused browsers to be far chunkier than they need to be for simple web tasks. Internet Explorer and Netscape are probably the two fattest browsers around, with Mozilla checking in closely behind them.
