Microsoft shows tools used to debug Windows XP

Microsoft Corp. has shown off some of the tools it used to optimize the Windows XP operating system, which is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2001.

At a seminar at the company´s Silicon Valley Campus on Tuesday, one of the company´s engineers gave demonstrations of tools that had been used to debug both the raw source code for the operating system, and the actual compiled programs.

Active Directory fix to require significant upgrade

A key security flaw in Microsoft´s Active Directory pointed out more than 12 months ago by early adopters won´t be patched for nearly another year.

What´s more, enterprise users will have to upgrade all their directory servers, known as domain controllers, to the forthcoming "Whistler" version of Windows 2000 to activate the patch.
