IBM is set to unveil within the coming weeks a new appliance server that it has developed in collaboration with Microsoft, according to sources familiar with the company´s plans. The system, code named Pine Hill, will be aimed at Internet and application service providers.

Pine Hill is a Windows 2000-based device, but it will also include some new IBM software the company will introduce at the same time. The software, which IBM is calling Netfinity Web Server Accelerator, is designed to facilitate caching architectures in which the appliance is positioned between the main server and the Internet. IBM said the setup will greatly reduce the wait times that frustrate e-commerce companies and Web surfers alike.

MICROSOFT showed here Tuesday the prototype of a handheld device capable of recognizing voice commands and taking dictation from users. Its purpose is partly to eliminate the difficulty of entering data in to these types of devices.

A Microsoft representative gave a brief demonstration of the product Tuesday during the morning keynote address from Bill Gates, the company´s chairman and chief software architect, at the software vendor´s Latin America Enterprise Solutions Conference 2000 here.

The Court recently migrated 63 servers and more than 1,200 client PCs to Windows 2000. The operating system has boosted reliability and manageability. In addition, it supports a new, statewide case-tracking system that's available internally and over the Web. And it powers the Court's public Web site, which lawyers and others use to conduct free background checks and query all state case laws.

Software AG and Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic agreement to integrate Software AG´s enterprise integration technologies with the Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 to extend its COM Transaction Integrator (COMTI) feature to 3270 I/O-based Customer Information Control System (CICS) applications. This offering expands the integration of Microsoft:registered: Windows:registered: and non-Windows operating system-based enterprise systems and provides a broader offering by Microsoft and Software AG in the application integration space. The arrangement also includes support for Software AG´s Natural applications. Software AG will adapt its existing OS/390-based technology to integrate tightly with COMTI, and will sell the new offering, the Software AG CICS 3270 Adapter for Host Integration Server 2000. The companies will work together to market and support the solution to enterprise customers.

Version 3.0 of 98lite, the software designed to allow Windows 98 to run without the integrated Internet Explorer, has reached RC1 stage and according to developer Shane Brooks final code should be ready in a few weeks time. In a centrally managed environment, an administrator can provide anything from tightly controlled data-entry applications to full-range desktop productivity software suites on Windows-based terminals (WBTs). O&O Software has release the first public beta of O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware. O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware is a free "light version" of O&O Defrag V.2 and may be used for manually operated local defragmentation.

O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware is optimized for Windows NT 4 Workstation / Server and Windows 2000 Professional, Server and Advanced Server. It is completely integrated into Microsoft Management Console as a snap-in and may be used to replace the standard defragmentation software for Windows 2000.

Functionality

Partitions can be analyzed and manually defragmentred with the SPACE defragmentation function.
