Application Center 2000, its deployment and management tool for businesses that are "scaling out" their Web applications. Scaling out uses clusters of standard servers instead of a single, monolithic "big-iron" server. Using Application Center 2000, enterprises are already enjoying the higher availability and greater scalability benefits of a scaled-out architecture while managing the servers with the ease and cost-effectiveness of managing a single server.
"Web-based applications have different requirements and act differently than traditional applications," said Dan Kusnetzky, vice president of System Software Research at International Data Corp. "It is not acceptable for them to appear to either slow down or become unavailable. A reliable and available Web-based application means less work for administrators and both a measurable savings and successful implementation to CEOs. Scaling out is a proven way to fulfill organizationsΒ΄ requirements for 99.999 percent uptime for their Web-based applications."

Months into the development cycle, and with costs for the database tier of its current solution spinning out of control, the medical profiling startup Medigenesis Inc. decided it needed to find a more cost-effective solution that fit both its database needs and business model. That solution was to switch from a Solaris and Oracle combination to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 running on Intel-based servers. Just a few days after Microsoft released the latest external beta build of Windows XP, number 2446, what looks like an internal build seems to be breaking loose - and there are pictures.
