Distributed to hundreds of thousands of testers, beta 2 provides the opportunity for continued testing of the next version of Microsoft´s new operating system. Windows XP, the new Windows with a new look, is built on an enhanced Windows 2000 engine that enables exciting new experiences, giving users the freedom to unlock the possibilities of the digital world.

"The broad distribution of Windows XP beta 2 through the MSDN:registered: developer program, TechNet, Microsoft´s own internal testing, and the technical beta program represent Microsoft´s commitment to working with our partners, customers and employees to make sure Windows XP is rock-solid," said Chris Jones, vice president of the Client Group in the Windows division at Microsoft. Microsoft finalized Windows XP Beta 2 on Friday, declaring build 2462a as the release. The company then posted Beta 2 for download by beta testers Sunday at noon PST, while the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) will ship Beta 2 on Monday. Beta 2 will be the final beta release for Windows XP, which is largely considered "feature complete" at this point. Moving forward, the company will focus on fit and finish issues, bug fixes, and other small improvements as it moves to release Windows XP in time for holiday sales.

Microsoft Corp. is on track to deliver the second beta of Windows XP to testers and test sites Friday, Brian Valentine, the company´s senior vice president of the Windows division, has confirmed.

In an interview with eWEEK, Valentine said it was "all systems go" for a Friday release unless a priority one bug, or "show stopper," was found. "But, as of now, there are none of these," he said.

Beta two will be released to Microsoft´s (Nasdaq: MSFT) TechNet site, its MSDN subscribers and the internal standard beta test list, essentially reaching hundreds of thousands of potential beta testers.

According to several sources at Microsoft, the company is set to finally release Windows XP Beta 2 today or early tomorrow, some 3 weeks behind schedule. The delay, however, occurred because Microsoft officials wanted this release to be of the highest possible quality; virtually everyone I´ve talked to at the company says that Microsoft has really raised the bar with this release.
