With the next version of its consumer Windows operating system, Microsoft is trying to make computers less daunting and prone to crashes. To reach that goal, Microsoft not only needs to clean up its own code, but also all the third-party drivers, little bits of software that help the system communicate with peripherals and other add-ons.

So Microsoft is taking a hard line with developers. When computer owners using Windows XP try to install new hardware or software with drivers that have not passed Microsoft certification, they will get an ominous warning message.

Big Blue unveiled its IBM eServer xSeries 430 on Friday, a 64-processor NUMA system built for 32-bit Intel processors. The systems, an outgrowth of the NUMA-Q line IBM acquired 18 months ago when it bought Sequent Computer Systems, support Linux and mainframe applications immediately. They will begin supporting Datacenter Server in the Whistler timeframe. Microsoft currently says its Whistler servers will probably ship in the fourth quarter.

Microsoft on Monday released the second test version of the new version of Windows, also launching a preview version for the public. But those spending $19.95 for the preview may be forced to buy additional memory or upgrade their processor to run the software.

Microsoft´s Web site recommends a minimum 300MHz Pentium II processor and 128MB of RAM to run the Windows XP beta, up from a 133MHz processor and 64MB of memory for Windows 2000. Although many PCs come with 128MB now, machines sold a year ago, especially budget PCs, typically came with much less memory.

Today at the Windows(r) Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2001, Microsoft Corp. announced plans to support the emerging IEEE 802.1x local area networks and security standard in its technologies. In addition, several leading manufacturers and service providers also voiced their support for the standard (see attached quote sheet). Built-in support for the emerging IEEE 802.1x standard will enable easy deployment of secure networks in the enterprise, home and public places. This is especially beneficial to public network access providers and the users of WiFi wireless LANs (802.11), enabling easy, automatic and secure connectivity any time, any place using PCs, laptops or other smart devices.

Microsoft also announced support for IEEE 802.1x in the Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP operating system, which reached another significant milestone today when the beta 2 version was delivered to tens of thousands of beta testers. Support for the standard is part of the beta version. IEEE 802.1x support in Windows XP will enable automatic configuration, greater security and more flexibility for people on the go.

Microsoft (stock: MSFT) will push DataCenter and Advanced Server editions of Windows "Whistler" to big business, small-business package, and developing a "Web blade" edition for serving up HTML pages.

The successor to Windows 2000 server—code-named Whistler server—could ship in four editions, compared with Microsoft´s three Windows 2000 packages, said Brian Valentine, Microsoft senior vice president, at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference in Anaheim, Calif.
