What factors are considered when you choose a core logic chipset for your motherboard? Currently, how many of your motherboards are based on VIA or Intel chipsets?
The most important factor will be the chipset features, and then it is the market segment to be addressed, currently we have about 15 models are based on VIA and 5 on Intel.

What Windows 98 did for USB, Windows XP will do for IEEE 1394. Microsoft urges PC makers to include at least one back-panel IEEE 1394 port, plus at least two more upfront along with the "Designed for Windows XP" logo. A system thus equipped will be able to boot from an internal or external 1394 hard drive, engage in P2P cooperation, send and receive MPEG-2 video, and make IP connections.

Microsoft has developed a set of guidelines and recommendations for PC manufacturers seeking to label their machines with the Windows XP logo. These aren´t finalized yet, but I want to share them with you so you can consider them when purchasing your next computer.

Some of the items I´ve listed are requirements and others are mere recommendations or best practices; for simplicity´s sake, I have made no distinction between them. Interestingly, while the "PC Design Checklist for Windows XP" includes just about everything else, I see nothing about processor speed. I guess "faster is better" goes without saying.

Xerox has warned all 50,000 employees in the US not to install the Windows XP beta on company computers.

The printer giant sent round an email on Wednesday telling staff that Xerox had experienced "three major network outages since Friday, March 30, that are directly traceable to the installation of the Microsoft Windows XP Beta (Whistler) code on devices attached to the Xerox production network."

Driver Verifier is a tool for monitoring Windows kernel-mode drivers and graphics drivers. Microsoft strongly encourages hardware manufacturers to test their drivers with Driver Verifier to ensure that drivers are not making illegal function calls or causing system corruption. Driver Verifier has been enhanced with new tests and features for Beta 2 of the next release of the Microsoft:registered: Windows:registered: family of operating systems, code-named Windows "Whistler."

PCinsight has compiled a quick article highlighting the various products showcased at Comdex Canada West that recently took place.

One board which did catch my attention (and that I “was” allowed to snap a picture of), was their limited edition “pink” motherboard. An AOpen rep informed me that this was one of only 2000 of such boards produced, and that it was exclusive to Japan. While I would probably not want a pink board myself, I think a blue or red one would look rather interesting.
