This spring, following in the footsteps of Microsoft
SQL Server
2000, both IBM Corp. and Oracle Corp. announced the integration of online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining functionality into their upcoming enterprise database products. Nearly four years ago, Microsoft Corp. integrated OLAP and data warehousing functionality into the SQL Server product. In August 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 introduced Analysis Services, adding data mining and closed loop analysis to the OLAP functionality that had been introduced with SQL Server 7.0. The result was an out-of-box, easy-to-use tool that enables companies to synthesize huge volumes of information, recognize and predict trends, and make accurate decisions about key business issues. Now the competition has fallen into line with Microsoft´s vision, and imitation is proving to be the sincerest form of flattery.

MICROSOFT WILL ANNOUNCE this week that Windows XP is slated to ship in late October, two sources familiar with the software giant´s plans said Friday.
While that ship date will match Microsoft´s plans to get the next version of its Windows operating system out the door by the end of the year, it is unclear whether the relatively late date -- Oct. 29, according to one source, who requested anonymity -- will upset the schedules of PC makers, who are looking to Windows XP to boost sales, particularly during holiday season.

Companies that don´t start Windows 2000 upgrades by the end of the quarter should scrap their plans, a market research company warned on Tuesday.
That´s because upgrading after midyear would mean taking on a long and challenging project, with the clock ticking down on Microsoft´s support for that system. But waiting could be costly, too, as companies knuckle down for several years of running two or more different versions of Windows at the same time.

The E-mail client in Opera 5.11 is more stable and better looking. It uses a new display engine, which is also shared with the news client. Opera 5.11 now supports encrypted POP and SMTP and makes sending and retrieving mail more secure.
Better DOM and CSS support
Opera 5.11 includes many additions to its DOM and CSS engines. All together, this makes Opera more standard compliant and a better browser.
For example, Opera now supports CSS system fonts and colors, which allows users to customize the color scheme and font setup. Opera takes advantage of this new function in the updated E-mail client.
Bug fixes
As always, a new version means fixing those bugs that have caused problems in previous releases. While we cannot claim that Opera is bug free, version 5.11 goes a long way to make browsing a stable and enjoyable experience.
