Stratus Technologies is bringing the concept of fault-tolerant servers down to the volume Windows 2000 server market, and is planning a pitch for new channel partners, company officials say.

The Compatibility-mode technology is currently used by Windows 2000 to ensure built-in compatibility for many popular programs. After Windows XP interim build 2469 arrived Friday, more than just testers were able to experience the beta. A leaked login to the tester-only Windows Beta Web site quickly surfaced, and spread like wild fire throughout IRC and over instant messenger. Sources confirmed the breached account was active for approximately seven hours, resulting in mass unauthorized downloads of private beta releases. The bandwidth strain is said to have crippled Redmond, forcing Microsoft to shut down the beta site and other services.

CNET News.com early Sunday downloaded the 101MB file from a Microsoft Web site. The service pack installed without incident on a MicronPC TransPort GX+ Plus notebook with 850MHz Pentium III processor and 256MB of RAM.

Overall, Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 appeared to modestly boost system performance, while adding several new features.
New features included in the update, which will most likely be labled Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, enhanced security and--borrowing from the forthcoming Windows XP--better compatibility with older software applications. The latter could be important to spurring Windows 2000 sales.

Thousands of servers connected to the Internet have been compromised by a recently discovered worm, the Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT) and security Web site Attrition.org said Thursday.

"We´ve received reports from over 100 sites. These indicate that several thousand Web sites running (Microsoft Corp.´s) Internet Information Server (IIS) software were defaced and that over 200 Solaris machines were compromised," CERT Internet Security Analyst Chad Dougherty said.
