Microsoft today released a preview version of its newest Windows Media Player in its latest push to unseat RealNetworks as the dominant provider of online multimedia technology.

The new Windows Media Player 7 brings Microsoft a step closer to catching RealNetworks´ Jukebox product, which organizes, stores and plays digital media on personal computers. Although the software maker has an investment in MusicMatch, which competes with RealNetworks in this category, it has never offered its own jukebox feature.

Thanks to Mark for pointing me on this:

On Tuesday, March 28, at 6 p.m. Pacific (Los Angeles) time, join the Windows 2000 Resource Kit writers for a special, one-hour chat, in which the writers will:

- Offer MCPs valuable tips and strategies for using the Windows 2000 Resource Kit to find the specific solutions for rolling out and configuring the software;
- Promote the features and benefits of the new Windows 2000 Resource Kit; and
- Gather valuable feedback from MCPs on how they use the Resource Kit

In order for the team to get feedback from chat participants, the chat room will be kept open during the first 30 minutes, so that chat participants can post answers to questions posed by the writers. Then, the latter half of the hour will be moderated, with questions being posted to the Resource Kit writers on a first-asked, first-served basis.

In a letter Intel sent to its channel partners on the 18th of January (see link below), the firm said that because of tightness in supplies, and a rapid move from Slot 1 (SECC2) packaging to flip-chip (FC-PGA) packaging, it was recommending the use of slot-to-socket adaptors.

Indeed, earlier this year, there were strong indications from some of Intel´s PC manufacturer customers that it could offer its own workaround device, to make up for the gap in mobo support.

SQL Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) addresses specific issues that were discovered in SQL Server 7.0 and Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 since their ship date. Because SQL Server Service Packs are cumulative, SP2 includes all fixes from Service Pack 1 (SP1) and can be applied to an original installation or to one where SP1 was previously applied. It is recommended that you include SP2 in all new SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0 installations.

SP2, for SQL Server 7.0 and MSDE 1.0, is in two parts to reduce the size of downloads: Database Components and OLAP Services Components.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software firm is still investigating the apparent theft of the software, she said.

It is believed a copy of the OS, which is being tested internally by the company, came directly from Microsoft´s internal Web site. It is not unusual for software in Microsoft´s public beta testing program to show up on the Web, but it is unusual for software that is still being tested internally, known as internal builds, to show up there.
