Microsoft on Wednesday changed the licensing terms it imposes on PC manufacturers to install its Windows operating system, responding to a recent ruling in its antitrust case.

In a dramatic shift, Microsoft will allow PC makers to remove Internet Explorer icons and entries from the Start Menu, as well as provide the ability to remove user access to Internet Explorer in the new Windows XP. The company also will extend this to Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows 2000.

Intel has stopped shipping its top-end server chip because of a bug that could cause servers to crash.

Intel began shipping the chip, the Pentium III Xeon with 2MB of high-speed "cache" memory, in March. But about a month later, a company that sells computers using the chip notified Intel that it found a problem while testing the chip, Intel spokesman Bill Kircos said Tuesday.

German techies Fully Licensed GmbH claim - convincingly - to have unravelled the Windows Product Activation (WPA) system used in the latest versions of Microsoft software, including Office XP and Windows XP. The bottom line, according to the company, is that WPA is not particularly intrusive, does not invade anybody´s privacy, and is a lot more forgiving of hardware changes than has been speculated.

Amazon.com customers looking to place advanced orders for Microsoft´s Windows XP operating system were out of luck Tuesday as the product listing disappeared from the online store.

Amazon had started taking preorders for Windows XP last week, company spokeswoman Ling Hong said Monday. The company typically takes orders for software before it is released, as it had done with Office XP, she said.

Consumers could pay more for Windows XP than for earlier versions of the operating system, according to early pricing information posted by online retailer Amazon.com.

Though Microsoft has not disclosed pricing on the new operating system, Amazon has started taking orders before Windows XP´s Oct. 25 release. Amazon´s price for the upgrade version of XP is $10 more than a similar version of Windows Me, the current consumer operating system. The full version costs $20 more than the corresponding Me release.
